Juan Watch

The surprise move came on Thursday.  Lefty Jeff Francis was placed on the 15 day Disabled List, Reid Brignac was designated for assignment, Rob Scahill and DJ LeMahieu were recalled, and the Colorado Rockies announced Tyler Chatwood would make Juan Nicasio’s (3-1, 5.13) Saturday start, with Nicasio moving back a day to slide into Francis’ slot.  Eager minds anticipated the coup de gras, an ensuing announcement that actually Drew Pomeranz would replace Nicasio.  It didn’t come, and now the eager minds await Nicasio’s performance on a Sunday afternoon that presents Colorado with an opportunity to take 3 of 4 from the San Francisco Giants.  They’ll have to do it against one of their arch-tormentors, left-hander Barry Zito (3-2, 3.40).  The rivals square-off this afternoon at 2:10 MDT at Coors Field in Denver.

Zito, declared dead in 2011, shut the Rockies-out in their 2012 Home Opener, setting the stage for the uplifting season to follow. He shut them-out again on April 10, allowing 7 hits in 7 innings.  The embattled Nicasio last pitched Monday, when he lost to the Cubs, surrendering 5 runs in the first two innings of a 6-inning effort.  He settled down over the final four, ending with a line of 5 runs, 8 hits, a walk, and 2 strike-outs.

The front-running San Francisco 2nd-baseman and former Rockie Marco Scutaro gets a day off in his pursuit of Joe DiMaggio and immortality.  Nick Noonan will handle 2nd-base with shortstop Brandon Crawford moving-up to the 2-hole.  Nolan Arenado gets his first rest since his promotion from Colorado Springs, with DJ LeMahieu penciled in at 3rd for Colorado manager Walt Weiss.  Current RWO favorite Eric Young Jr is back to bungle-around in right-field, and Yorvit Torrealba will be catching Nicasio.

It’s your kind of day down at the old ballpark if you like ’em cloudy and cool.  Temperatures will be in the mid- to upper-60°s and the wind will blow-in from left-center at 8 to 11 MPH.  RoOT has Drew, Jeff, and Jenny leading the clown show, and Jerry and Jack are on KOA 850 am.
