The Colorado Rockies got one of these recently concocted Poor Scoreless Starts (3 innings, 72 pitches, 43 strikes) from Drew Pomeranz Tuesday evening at Turner Field in Atlanta. Three more scoreless followed from Carlos Torres, two from Rex Brothers, and Matt Belisle pitched the ninth as the Rockies defeated the Atlanta Braves 6-0.
Tommy Hanson held Colorado in-check into the fourth when Rockies left-fielder Carlos Gonzalez homered with one out. Jordan Pacheco led-off the fifth for Colorado with a homer to left. Atlanta got sloppy in the seventh. After one was out, DJ LeMahieu reached on an error by Braves’ 1st-baseman Freddie Freeman. LeMahieu moved-up on a wild-pitch by Peter Moylan with Torres at the plate. Moylan then walked Torres and was replaced by Luis Avilan. Dexter Fowler worked Avilan for seven pitches and drove a single to left to score LeMahieu. Avilan next fanned Josh Rutledge, but strike three was wild and Torres, who had moved to third on the Fowler single, scored the 4th Rockies run.
Colorado added two in the eighth on a Tyler Colvin double and Pacheco single. After Chris Nelson forced Pacheco at 2nd, LeMahieu singled to right and set a Keystone Cops routine in motion as Nelson came around on consecutive errors by Jason Heyward and pitcher Chad Durbin.
Pomeranz only walked one of the 14 hitters he faced, but he threw 5 pitches to to four of them, 6 to six, and 7 to one. Torres delivered two strong innings then got in trouble in the sixth when back-to-back singles by Martin Prado and Heyward put runners at second and third. But Torres struck-out catcher David Ross, and Rosario picked-off Heyward straying-off 1st, LeMahieu coming-back to the plate to nail Prado for a 2-4-2 double-play. Brothers handled the seventh and eighth, striking out 4, and Belisle faced 4 batters to secure the shut-out.
Game 3 of the 4-game set is tomorrow evening at 5:10 MDT. The Rockies turn to right-hander Alex White (2-7, 5.58). Lefty Mike Minor (7-10, 4.79) will pitch for the Braves.
