Matzek’s First Game

Tonight Tyler Matzek will take the mound five years after being drafted #11 in 2009. He’s struggled with command, but at this point the Rockies aren’t choosers.

Matzek was really good tonight. I picked the right one to watch. Almost dominant at times. Got away with a couple high sliders early, but then showed a really sharp swing-and-miss slider and a 95 mph fastball. I thought Butler showed a live arm but no command, Bergman was more lucky than good, but Matzek? For tonight at least, the real deal. And Rutledge looks like a player again.

OK. I stand corrected. Matzek looked very, very good. So how come he’s the 3rd guy called up?? Again, seems like he can pitch, not just throw.

And agree on Rutledge–maybe he just needed some reps?

Impressive outing all around, a nice unexpected change of pace.

One more thing. I really liked how quickly Matzek worked. No deliberate slowness. Another nice change of pace.

Nice game to watch. Whether its call ups or good play. Give me a reason to care.

THAT is what’s known as a breath of fresh air, folks… In a stinky place almost out of oxygen… 🙂

I’m out of town so just caught updates on my phone and finally the box score late. It looked like Matzuk was the real deal tonight. And you wonder why he was the 3rd guy called up. I saw one spring training game in March. He game in in the 9th and walked 3 straight guys. He looked terrible. The same game, Brett Anderson had 2 or 3 successful sac. bunts and I thought this guy can really handle the… Read more »

Amazing how much more fun baseball is when you aren’t down 3 or 4 after a third of an inning! If Nicascio could go to the bullpen and be as effective as Frankie has been we might really be able to solidify the pen.Drewpo now has a 1.90 ERA and is like 5-2 .

Surpise, surprise. Saying before the game how great it would be if Matzek turned out to be like Matt Holiday and blossomed in the bigs. So far, so good. The kid’s a ballplayer as well. Couldn’t believe when they sent him home–nice hustle and slide. Great spark for the club. Rutledge’s bat is heating up but his defense still leaves me scratching my head. They want him to have that 2B job so badly they’re willing to put up with… Read more »

Doc, Rutledge is still a work in progress at 2B. You may have seen that one play last night where he inexplicably broke toward 2B on a ball hit to his left side. He’s played a fair amount of 2B the last couple years, but the Rockies management could have given him a lot more exposure by moving him to 2B a long time ago. Instead, knowing that they’d signed Tulo for like 10 years they still kept Rut at… Read more »

And it makes things a little better to think that maybe, just maybe, we could run out a rotation next year of with Matzek-Butler-Gray in it, 3 guys who throw 95, all with legitimate ace potential …

Ag, If they re-sign DLR (again, you need a veteran and he wins at Coors) and Lyles, you have 4 guys who throw 95+ and one who throws 93 with amazing movement on the sinker. That would be a young but very talented rotation. I could live with frustrations of that rotation more than the Morales, Nicasio, and even Chacin issues. And then you would still have depth in Bergman and Anderson (Tyler). I also bet they pick-up the option… Read more »
