More Division Wrangles

The Colorado Rockies wrapped-up the 3rd week of 2015 with a lousy loss that got them swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Colorado had stormed-off for the west coast and rampaged through the San Francisco Bay, wiping-out the Giants in 3-straight.  They ran into some competition in LA.  As somebody mentioned earlier in the week, the Giants are not the same without Pence and Panda, and speaking of Panda, how ’bout that little snit he incited with Baltimore journeyman Ubaldo Jimenez?  Something about World Series rings I guess.

The Dodgers’ outstanding pitching kept the Rockies’ offense in-check and the LA offense exploited Colorado’s marginal mound staff sufficient enough to effect a disturbingly efficient wipeout. If it didn’t mark the end of the world, as some of the faithful have declared, it certainly gave the Rockies something to think about if they’re really serious about being serious.

In the meantime Colorado returns to Coors Field to host the San Diego Padres for 4, and the wounded Giants make their first 2015 visit to LoDo on the weekend for a 3-game face-off.  Jorge “The Cat” De La Rosa (14-11, 4.10 in 2014) makes his much anticipated 2015 debut in tonight’s 6:40 MDT contest versus the reconstituted Padres, the projected juggernaut constructed by general manager AJ Preller for his first full season on the job.  “The Cat” says he is feeling good for the big start; the groin is healed and he’ll fill us in on the next thing that’s bothering him after the game.  DLR will be opposed by a guy with an equally amazing name, Odrisamer Despaigne (1-0, 0.77), a 28 year old junkman who’s filling-in for injured Ian Kennedy.  Despaigne was effective against Arizona last Tuesday, getting a win on 7 innings of 1-run-2-hit pitching.

Rockies’ manager Walt Weiss has shuffled the lineup a bit for the return to Coors.  Corey Dickerson will hit 2nd, Carlos Gonzales 4th, and Justin Morneau is 6th.  The new-look San Diego order has Wil Myers leading-off, and a middle of the order that features right-fielder Matt Kemp hitting 3rd, left-fielder Justin Upton cleaning-up, and 3rd-baseman Will Middlebrooks in the 5-hole.

Sunny skies will prevail at game time with a temperature of about 53°.  A moderate breeze will blow-in from left at 6 to 7 MPH.  It’s the usual broadcast scene:  Root Sports has the TV, radio’s on 850 am KOA.

Thank goodness Bridich/Monfort thought outside the box and brought in a veteran game caller instead of another starting pitcher or two! Hundley’s game calling skills continue to make a difference. Rockies’ ERA when he’s catching (as of right now): 4.34. Oh, and De La Rosa is proving Ed right …

ROTFL. You’ve been playing too much fantasy baseball. If the first part of your proposal was to keep the money spent on Hundley and stay the course with Rosario, OK. Better offense, more lousy defense, and no need for any level of game calling acumen when pitchers can’t hit the glove anyway. But, let’s see where that money would have went with actual economics applied in the second part of your suggestion. $3.1M (which is what Hundley is earning) wouldn’t… Read more »

There is a solution – but most here don’t want to hear about it. It’s an ugly total gut and remodel ala Tampa Bay and/or Houston. It will take years to bear fruit.

Or the players could just play better.

Tulo, Cargo, Morneau, Dickerson, Blackmon, Arenado

6 of the 8 bats actually have some respectable or better history swinging the bat.

Yet they can’t get it in motion at the same time.

I understand the pitching staff having constant problems. I’m not sure why the offense swoons.

Yeah, I’m afraid you are right. We could enter the self destruct codes. The best news may be the Mets being in 1st place and needing a major upgrade at shortstop. Tulowitzki would have to be traded to a contender in exchange for pitching: best AAA arm (Syndergaard), best AA arm, and two A arms. Rely on the Mets’ scouting, who has a track record of finding pitchers. And then it would be a two to three year wait, but… Read more »

I’m going to go out on a limb and say something fishy is happening in the clubhouse or off the field. Teams as a whole don’t just magically collapse like this.

Yup, the season is over. Our SP’ers are as bad as most predicted.

Let Hale, DLR-the-pussy, Matzek, Kendrick and Lyles man the rotation through May.

Get Gray, Bergman, Butler, Matzek along with the best one of the remaining four listed above in the rotation on June 1 (or thereabouts).

Let’s see if we have ANY major league pitchers in the system.

All of you RWO’ers can now officially label me as the “Doom-and-Gloom” idiot. I can take it.

Ed – sometimes the truth hurts. You’re just speaking the truth. The Rockies need the nuclear option. It should have been implemented last year. Each day we wait, the less the return and the greater the capital spent. The problem is this – to properly implement the nuclear option, we need a new Owner, an upgraded scouting staff, and full commitment to sabermetrics. Look at the Cubs cleaning house and bringing Theo and the Astros cleaning house (including the Owner)… Read more »

Ed – I have a crazy ass plan.

Why don’t you and I start some sort of company – maybe Rockpile LLC, with the goal being to buy the Rockies. We have a small problem – no money. So lets take Rockpile LLC on “Sharktank” and offer Mark Cuban a 99% stake for say 750M.

We’d probably get Mr. Wonderful, who’d bleed the team of talent and focus on increasing drink revenues by turning the upper deck into some kind of mega-bar … oh, wait a minute …
