Mostly-Delightfully Surprising Playoffs

It’s been quite a breath of fresh air watching the mighty teams get shocked (at home!).  Except for the Giants over the Nationals, of course.  Bleh.  I’m on the fence about Dodgers/Cards, as I hate them both, but to see the Angels reeling!  the Tigers swept!  It’s been fun.  I’m even keeping out the thoughts of “what if” and “we could have…” when I see, for example, Bud Norris (why didn’t the Rockies go for this guy, exactly?) matching David Price, and his team wiping out the Tigers.  Or even Jason Grilli appearing on a playoff team (back from the dead?  why can’t the Rockies just KEEP some of these guys like him, Javy Lopez, even Darren Oliver?)  oh…that’s right.  I don’t know and I don’t care.  The Rockies are off my screen for the duration of the mostly-delightfully surprising playoffs.  GO ROYALS!  what a fun team, and maybe not quite Cinderella because they are GOOD.  But they’ve got me.

Won’t be able to see much more before the Series, though, as I’m heading to the East Coast for some happy family time (no baseball fans in this group :-))

roxnsox, great comments. I’m loving the Royals and O’s — we’re now guaranteed one underdog franchise to root for in the World Series. The only disappointing thing is the Giants ready to take out the Nats, but it is an even-numbered year …

Agreed!Some great games,great play and hope for smaller market teams.Of course the KC model means we have to go 29 years—I won’t be around to see it if so.

I commented on this (in a roundabout way) on the Hot Stove thread. I think if you had asked Scouts in 2007 when the Royals would next make the playoffs – you would have heard answers like 2010 or 2011. But they were sort of clumsy getting over the hump – and didn’t until they traded Wil Myers for Shields. It will be interesting to see if Theo and the Cubs are taking notes. They have a ridiculous Farm full… Read more »

FWIW – I think this is the model the Rox should follow. Go “all-in” on offense and trade it for pitching. Developing pitching is so fickle.

I’m rooting for the Cards/Royals/Orioles/and yes (hang on) Giants (cuz I hate East Coast bias). Common theme in those teams winning? bullpen! and starters going 6-plus innings!

I’m hoping LA pulls out their series against the Cards, not because I like LA, but because I think they are more likely to stand up to the annoying Giants and take them out of it. Fun seeing the Tigers fall, and interesting matchup between the Orioles and Royals. Once again, worst case scenario is for SF to make it into the Series, so I’m pulling for Orioles because i have a hunch the Royals will run out of mojo… Read more »

Notice Dodgers LH pitchers can’t get left on left hitters out the entire series? Even gave up HRs to them.

Stat of the night;

If the Cards hold on and win, top 6 payroll teams out. 11 of top 13 out. Giants are #7.
