Motivation for another day

Not much analysis other than we died in another Kendrick air raid last night. (When does the hurting stop?) That, and Nick Groke set off a Twitter storm that ended up with folks attacking Tracy Ringolsby for defending Tulo. Gawd.

The comment wasn’t completely out of context. Read the whole Patrick Saunders story for more, but essentially, Tulo was saying he drew his motivation recently from his on-base streak. For a guy motivated by winning, he’s had to find something else to put in the tank. Not surprising. The Rockies are playing for nothing here. Ringolsby’s story said Tulo still wants to be here, quoting Tulo as saying he “has never said one word about a trade.”

The Rox rotation, if you can call it that, is still Grayless. Word has it they are going to try to limp through with a 4-man until right before the trade deadline. Something is really fishy with that, but it’s hard to say what right now.

Today’s victim is DLR. This is what happens when Charlie is out against left handers … no leadoff-ish hitter and a very jumbled line up. I think Walt is going to the hat method pretty soon.

Oops – make that exponentially truly terrible.

Ag has previously noted this – he needs to be released (tomorrow isn’t soon enough) and Parker brought up. It should also be noted that as trade talk heats up, the Rox don’t have a bona fide, classic 1B in the organization.

Two gigantic mental errors in this game already – Wilin cutting off a strike to home and Roughned Odor/Elvis Andrus staring at each other instead of fielding a DP ball. Odor has been as bad as Wilin.

SD what is bonafide first baseman that the rockies would pay for if it isn’t Paulsen?

I continue to maintain our best partner for Tulo is the Yankees. Their Farm (at the top) is better than some think. Our penchant for waiting too long to pull the trigger on deals has likely cost us a shot at their top prospect (SP- Luis Severino) and their #2 prospect (OF- Aaron Judge – who I think could be a beast at Coors). But their #3/#4 guy is 1B Greg Bird. 2014 Arizona Fall League MVP. Recently moved up… Read more »

Please, please trade Tulo. Great player, probably a solid professional, but the countenance of a funeral director.

Vicious cycle every year: Rockies lose, Tulo’s attitude slides, Rockies lose, Tulo blames others, Rockies lose, Tulo reflects on horrible year, Rockies lose, Tulo finds an injury.

Lets take one element of the equation out and see what happens.

Prog, I agree that we should listen to offers for Tulo. If a team takes on his whole salary, then getting one highly regarded pitching prospect plus one pretty good position prospect would be OK.

Trade CarGo tomorrow. His value will never be any higher. If we wait until the deadline, he’s likely to be injured by then.

My Cargo trade: Cargo to LAA for CJ Wilson and Sean Newcombe. LAA has money, but has been burned by some bad contracts (Pujols just rated as one of the 5 worst in baseball, and they’re essentially paying Hamilton to play for the Rangers). CJ Wilson also falls into this category – to a lesser degree. His contract runs through 2016. He’s owed 20M next year. Cargo is owed 17M next year, and 20M in 2017. Newcombe is generally considered… Read more »

What’s wrong with Rockies. Plenty of things. But they just gave up 26 runs in 3 games. They were lucky to win one game.

As for the Tulo controversy. I’m not sure of all the he said, she said stuff. But in terms of baseball writers, I’ll take Ringolsby, you can have both Saunders and Groke.

Window of opportunity, Part 2: Jason Vargas, Royals lefty, TJ surgery. A homecoming of sorts for DLR! There’s two great trade partners, Dodgers and Royals. Get it done!

Shrewd.

Opportunity Part II – LAA lost David Freese to a broken finger (HBP) late last night. They were already looking for a big OF bat (hence my Cargo trade). They’ll need that big bat even more now.

Rox need to be careful. It appears the Reds are approaching the launch window on their fire sale. They have some of the same pieces (Jay Bruce vs. Cargo for example). Early bird gets the worm.

I like Carp’s deal with the Angels. And I’d look to trade Tulo to the Yankees for Bird and a pitching prospect. Rather than take Gregorious, I’d promote Adames now, who could keep the seat warm until Story is ready.

Julian – as part of the Gregorious deal, I would definitely give Adames and Story really long, hard looks as the Utility IF. I consider Gregoriuos a placeholder, not a long term solution.

As part of the Cargo deal, I bring up Parker immediately.

So Bettis was an elbow after all. Which is usually better than a shoulder. And they say no significant damage, no TJ surgery … Story at SS has apparently moved Adames to 3B for now, which fits into the plan of having Adames be the utility man later this year and next year. Now if we could only find a way to get Descalso out of the way. As carp and others have said, there’s a really nice opportunity to… Read more »

I saw the Bettis elbow news. I apologize for the “shoulder” post. I initially saw elbow on various initial Twitter reports, but the official MLB 15 DL transaction said shoulder.

Friedrich: stretch him out, try him as a starter again. What’s to lose? He’s thrown a total of 39 innings this year. That isn’t making any kind of impact. I think he’s best suited for the LOOGY role, but we’re stuck with Boone and crappy teams need starters with some talent, not 2 LOOGYs. Friedrich’s component stats vs. righties (small sample warning) have been pretty decent this year. I’d like to see some experimentation as we go forward, not spot… Read more »

I agree, start thinking outside of the box! However, not pitchers like Freidrich. Why not have Ottavino come back from his injury as a starting pitcher whenever that will be like he was originally? Go sign Aroldis Chapman with the pitch of “Hey, we will let you be a starter once again.” Then pay him more than anyone else will. Same for Wade Davis! We need pitchers that are mentally tough and who better than someone that closes games! You… Read more »

Think about this guys and girls:

C – RL (replacement level)
1B – Bird
2B – DJ
SS – Gregorious/Story
3B – NoDo
OF – Parker
OF – Dickerson
OF – FA +2 WAR
P – CJ Wilson
P – Chettis
P – Lyles
P – Gray
P – Freidrich/Rusin/Butler

Half-dozen new Prospects from dealing Cargo/Tulo/Blackmon/Hundley/JDLR. Current prospects not blocked.

Is the team I list above any worse than this year’s team? I think not.

A’s (never shy) ship Scott Kazmir to the Astros for 2 prospects. Both are borderline top 10 in the strong Astros system. One is having a breakout season.

Here’s a bit of a benchmark. The Brewers send Aramis Ramirez and 2M to Pirates for AA pitching prospect. Ramirez is an aging ex-star, but is still serviceable. Contract only through this year. Not a good contract, but also not awful. This sort of confirms what I think…..we can get a solid prospect (not great) for Cargo if we eat some of his contract or take back some contract in the deal (CJ Wilson for example). If we’re not willing… Read more »

Even with his contract, the way that he is playing now, isn’t CarGo a much better player than Ramirez? CarGo could really make a difference to a team in contention for a playoff spot. I think that we should get something good for him.

I think Cargo is better than Ramirez. But Ramirez finishes his contract this year. He’s only owed 5M. Cargo is owed the rest of this year is 37M over the next two. So there’s 37M reasons to like Ramirez when compared to Cargo.

These things are rarely apples to apples comparisons.

FWIW Julian – I don’t the 37M owed Cargo is “awful.” It’s not great, but there’s way worse contracts out there. This past winter, Jon Hart (Braves) did a great job taking some bad contracts to get deals done (Carlos Quintin…..and to a lesser extent Cameron Maybin). Us taking CJ Wilson (for example) softens the blow, is useful short term, and may be flippable ala Aramis Ramirez next year at this time.

I think all you guys and girls are crazy. The Rockies will never be good until 1 of 2 things happen. The first thing would be for Dick Montfert to sell the team. That won’t happen unless somebody offers him twice what the team is worth. More possible is that Dick finally realizes he needs a real president of the team. Somebody who knows sports (preferably baseball, but MacGregor was a football guy) and knows winning. Maybe eventually Dick will… Read more »

I like being called crazy! I agree 100% regarding Monfart. I don’t pretend to know the inner-workings of the Front Office at the highest level, but I do know the Monfart’s bought out Jerry McMorris in 2005. Typically, the impact of Ownership changes take a couple of years to really become visible. In my opinion (solely my opinion), Dickie begin meddling more and more with day-to-day baseball operations (and simultaneously gained power due to Charlie’s drinking issues and corresponding “downsizing”)… Read more »
