Rox Lineup Goes To Washington

With the Rockies in our nation’s capital…just days after America celebrated it’s 236 birthday;  Marc Stout thought it would be fun to tie in some of D.C.’s monuments and memorials to major league baseball.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

YA’ GOTTA’ START WITH THE WORLD’S TALLEST STONE STRUCTURE AND TALLEST OBELISK…THE WASHINGTON MONUMENT.

IT STANDS 555 FEET AND 5 AND 1/8 INCHES OVER THE NATIONAL MALL…AND OFFICIALLY OPENED IN OCTOBER OF 1888.

12 AND A HALF YEARS AFTER THE NATIONAL LEAGUE ORIGINATED; 12 AND A HALF YEARS BEFORE THE AMERICAN LEAGUE WAS FORMED.

THERE HAVE BEEN 7 WASHINGTON’S THAT HAVE PLAYED AT LEAST A GAME IN THE MAJORS.

CLAUDELL, STANDING TALL, AS THE ONLY ALL-STAR…WITH THE A’S IN ’75 AND THE BRAVES IN ’84.

UL WASHINGTON IS BEST KNOWN FOR 2 THINGS;

THAT EVER PRESENT TOOTHPICK IN HIS MOUTH…AND THE FACT THAT HIS NAME IS U-L…AND THE LETTERS STOOD FOR NOTHING…THAT WAS HIS NAME; U L.

RON WASHINGTON ONLY HIT .261 IN THE MAJORS.

BUT HE’S BEEN A HIT AS THE MANAGER OF THE TEXAS RANGERS; WINNING THE AL PENNANT THE LAST 2 YEARS.

DID YOU KNOW THE LINCOLN MEMORIAL’S EXTERIOR IS MADE ENTIRELY OF YULE MARBLE???

WHICH IS FOUND ONLY IN THE WEST ELK MOUNTAINS…A FEW MILES SOUTHEAST OF…YEP…MARBLE, COLORADO.

THE ROCKIES HAVEN’T HAD A LINCOLN ON THE CLUB’S ROSTER.

BUT THEY’VE HAD A FEW OTHER PLAYERS WITH THE LAST NAMES OF PRESIDENTS.

LIKE PITCHER MARK, ULYSSES S., GRANT…WHO ENDED HIS CAREER DURING COLORADO’S FIRST EVER SEASON.

THERE’S ORIGINAL ROCKIE CHARLIE, RUTHERFORD B., HAYES

ALAN…CHARLES…AND HOWARD JOHNSON, ALL HAVE THE SAME SURNAME AS LYNDON BAINES JOHNSON.

THE LINCOLN MEMORIAL WAS THE SITE OF MARTIN LUTHER KING’S FAMOUS “I HAVE A DREAM” SPEECH IN 1963;

LEFTY RELIEVER RAY KING APPEARED IN 67 GAMES WITH THE 2006 ROCKIES AND ENDED HIS CAREER WITH THE NATIONALS.

THE THOMAS JEFFERSON MEMORIAL WAS DEDICATED IN 1943…BUT HIS BRONZE STATUE WASN’T ADDED UNTIL 1947, DUE TO A SHORTAGE OF MATERIALS DURING WORLD WAR 2.

ABOUT THE BEST I CAN DO IS TELL YOU THAT 1947 WAS THE YEAR THE WORLD SERIES WAS FIRST SHOWN ON TV;

WITH JOE DIMAGGIO, YOGI AND THE YANKEES DEFEATING PEE WEE, JACKIE ROBINSON AND THE BROOKLYN DODGERS…4 GAMES TO 3.

AND OH YEAH, SHOELESS JOE JACKSON’S MIDDLE NAME IS JEFFERSON;

HIS .356 CAREER BATTING AVERAGE IS 3RD ALL TIME IN THE GAME…BUT HE WAS BANNED FROM BASEBALL AFTER THE 1919 BLACK SOX SCANDAL.

ROCKIES LINEUP

Fowler [CF]
Scutaro [2B]
Gonzalez [LF]
Cuddyer [RF]
Colvin [1B]
Pacheco [3B]
Nieves [C]
Herrera [SS]
Pomeranz [P]

Another game Chris Nelson isn’t playing. I Just don’t understand it, I love Jonny Sparkplug as much as JD, but Nelson needs to be there everyday to see what he will do with 450 or so ABs.

CIsco, in the other thread I pointed out that Ringolsby suggested Scutaro may have arm trouble. Looks to me like Tracy doesn’t want to play him at SS anymore. I’d play Nelson at SS if that’s the case

Cisco. I agree. Not sure what Tracy is doing. But then I haven’t figured him out the last two years.

I won’t be able to watch to well after 9 so unless the game goes about 12 to 15 innings I’m going to miss it.

Lucky me.

Soooooo glad that Pomeranz just had to be sent to AAA to start nine games with a 2.45 ERA winning four with ten unearned runs in Colorado Springs of all places. Seems to me that if his starts had been with the Rockies then they just might have won a few more games at the MLB level. I think the ball is almost the same (round) and it is still thrown to a catcher hopefully past a MLB hitter. Yes… Read more »

Now if CS can just turn White around we might have some pitching to build on for next year.The Nacasio news sucks,but better this year than a competitive year.

Pomeranz looks like he will be a legitimate #1 starter. I would love to see Francis continue to pitch well. That would give us two solid starting pitchers. Friedrich is a work in process, but so are a lot of #5 major league starters, so maybe with him that gives us three major league starters. At some point Nicasio, Chacin, and DLR should be healthy again, so that would be three more major league starters, although I’m not sure if… Read more »
