Multi-homer Opener

If only this were the regular season and not “meaningless” spring training.

The Rockies devoured the Snakes 11-0, holding the Diamondbacks to only two hits and forcing three errors from their partners at the Stick.

Colorado, on the other hand, put up 11 runs on 14 hits and only one error.

The standout players of the day were Cory Dickerson (2 for 3 w/2 RBI’s), Ryan Wheeler (2 for 3) and Casteel coming in with a pinch-hit HR in the 3rd. Murphy and Pridie also hit the long-ball.

Morales struggled with his command a bit (no surprise), walking two over two innings of work. He took the win. Tyler Matzek gave up the other hit in his two innings of work and they sandwiched some nice mound work by Kahnle, Martin, Brothers, Ottavino and Burke, all of them pitching hit-less innings.

Be nice if some of our bigger stars would have strong STs. It seems every year for the Rockies its some fringe player is the standout, Pacheco a few years ago.

Ed, TJ, anyone go to the spring training opener? I’m interested in scouting reports on some of the new guys. New throw-in in the Morales-Herrera deal, Chris Martin, threw a clean inning. He’s intriguing as a bullpen arm (I had previously called him a possible Matt Daley type, but I’ve never him pitch). Matzek came in for the final inning and also did well. Plus did Frankie look impressive, or was he mostly lucky? Catcher prospect Ryan Casteel hit one… Read more »

Not at the Rox game, but the A’s Addison Russell is a dynamic looking talent. Also……..cringe………Pomeranz looked damn good.

Today’s DP: Rox not setting starter pitch limits, but are determined to go to the bullpen earlier (3rd time through the batting order) whenever possible. Two points on this: (1) absolutely. This was the smart part of O’Dowd’s pitch limit/4-man rotation. (2) but there’s nothing special about the Rockies in this respect. Coors Field inflates opponents’ hitting numbers overall, from the first time through the order through the second and third times through the order. There’s a table in the… Read more »

If the Rox are serious about going to the bullpen earlier, then they will need to carry an eight-man bullpen to last the entire season. Plus at least two long relievers needs to be capable of throwing multiple innings one time thru the lineup. Perfect role candidates would be “Kerosene”, Bettis, Kahnle, etc.
