Nelson, Arenado and the Lineup

In Rockies news today Chris Nelson has been named the starting 3rd baseman.  The question of Nolan Arenado, as it relates to the 25 man roster, was answered when the team announced that he would be reporting to the Sky Sox until further notice.

Arenado wasn’t happy about the move, stating:

It’s disappointing. It was always my goal to be on the team, but I’ve learned a lot from this experience, mainly to control the controllables.
Overall it makes a lot of sense.  There is no reason to burn a year of team control for 3 weeks of extra playing time this season.
The rest of the roster should be announced later today.
Today’s game against the Brewers is a glimpse of what opening day might look like.  The Brewers will have their newly acquired gem on the mound, Kyle Lohse.  The Rockies will counter with…Schmidt?  Yep, Nick Schmidt will be starting for the Rockies in today’s Spring Training / Opening Day preview.

It was suppose to be DLR, but since he’s scheduled to pitch the second game vs. the Brewers, the Rox are having him pitch in a minor league game. Hence, Schmitt.

My biggest hope is Nelson performs above our expectations and makes either him or Arenado tradable for a good pitcher.

I like how the link to Nick Schmidt goes to Barry Bonds’ Baseball Reference page!

I see that it’s Yorvit over Ramon (that’ll be a DFA for him with the Rox eating most of his salary), Brignac over Herrera (optioned to AAA). Weiss was a helluva defensive SS, so I think he couldn’t get past Herrera’s lack of a SS arm. Obviously they don’t want Rutledge to shift to SS either when Tulo is out. One interesting thought: what if Rutledge is out? Brignac hasn’t played 2b (although he could learn). Guess what? I think… Read more »

Ag, Brignac had a very limited role at 2b with the Rays but he has played the position.

Reports are that Aaron Cook has signed with the Rox on a AAA contract. Not sure how I feel about this move. By having him in CS, does it take a rotation spot from a younger developing pitcher? If so, this is not a good move. My guess is he stays until Edwar Cabrera is ready to move into the CS rotation.

I’d like to point out that the camera adds 10 pounds…for some reason that didn’t happen with my pic of Chris Nelson. Oh well…yeah, we were all looking around when Schmidt went out to the mound. He looked good…until the 2nd time through the line up….

OH well, never a bad day at the ballpark.
