The Colorado Rockies have a pretty good notion they’re overmatched against the World Champion Giants. The San Diego Padres? Not so much. Colorado rolls right-hander Jhoulys Chacin (1-0, 1.35) out to face Padres’ righty Edinson Volquez (0-2, 10.00) in a 6:40 pm MDT contest at Petco Park, with the Rockies aiming to stay perfect against San Diego in 2013. Like Jon Garland and Tyson Ross on Friday, Chacin and Volquez meet for the 2nd time in less than a week. Chacin had the upper hand last Sunday, getting the win with a 6-2/3 inning 1-run appearance. Colorado got to Volquez for 3 in the 1st, including slugging Dexter Fowler’s 4th 2013 home run, and 1 in the 6th, in the Rockies’ 9-1 triumph in Denver.
It was Fowler’s 6th 2013 big fly that put Colorado over the top on Friday. He’ll be back in the lead-off slot tonight as manager Walt Weiss fields his day-to-day lineup, Reid Brignac subbing-in for Chris Nelson at 3rd base. Padres’ skipper Bud Black is sitting fairly-pat as well, swapping Mark Kotsay into his Friday lineup for pugilist and left-fielder Carlos Quentin.
It’ll be cloudy with 70% relative humidity on the harbor tonight in San Diego’s Gaslight District. The temperature will hold steady at around 60°, and wind will blow from 3rd to right at 8 MPH. No surprises on the broadcasts. Jenny and the Cowboy will flank Drew and Jeff on ROOT Sports, with Jerry and Jack on KOA 850 am.
