O’Dowd Gives Assessment of Farmhands

This is a must read article and Dan O’Dowd bumped into Drew Creasman of Purple Row in Grand Junction.  He gave a treasure of information that we normally don’t hear from the regular media.  Thanks, Mr. Creasman!

  • Ramiel Tapia is of particular interest.
  • Response to critic who claim that we are trying to change Jon Gray into a contact pitcher. Great info!
  • Speaks of catchers and what they are doing – standardizing training of catchers at all levels; Dom Nunez got good review.
  • Implied that Dan Winkler likely would have been on the big league club if not for the TJ.

I get why people in DOD’s position don’t want to deal with the media – and generally ignore it. But if he would sit down once a week for an hour with a different media person (maybe setup some type of rotation) and give interviews like this – I think it would help the team, and especially him. It’s a very good read – I strongly recommend it.

FWIW – while I like (and appreciate) DOD’s interview. I think the fundamental flaw in his logic was (and still is) reliance on key players that are physically very brittle. Tulo, Cargo, and Anderson in particular. And also heavy reliance on a key older player (Cuddyer). I don’t but the injury whining in our case – because this particular group is historically injury prone. The Texas Rangers (Prince Fielder never injured until this year, Jurickson Profar – young stud suffers… Read more »

An interesting read. But remember, this was the smartest man in baseball. Who has produced two playoff teams in fourteen years! One of which was a fluke (2007). Talking about players he drafted.

Kevin Towers was just fired by the D-Backs. That’s a guy I would love to see come here in some capacity. He obviously knows how to build a winner and knows the NL West quite well.

Nah, won’t happen. It would be too logical. Besides, don’t want to disrupt the wonderful chemistry and mojo that currently exists in Rox FO.

There was a time when Towers seemed good (so did Jim Bowden, Dan O’Dowd, etc.) but that time has passed him by. He’s been awful the last few years with the Snakes – and when they brought Tony LaRussa onboard, you had to know his days were numbered. The Rox need to look to successful organizations in similar (smaller market, limited budget) situations. Tampa and Oakland come to mind. Texas also comes to mind because playing a 6 month season… Read more »

carp, great contrast between the Rangers and us — their injury situation came out of the blue. Our was, unfortunately, kind of predictable. Cisco, a couple years ago I was saying “why did we let the Dbacks grab Kevin Towers when we should have got him first?” But his moves in Arizona were sometimes so bizarre that it left me thinking (1) he’s just lost it — as in, is he getting early onset dementia? (2) he’s so full of… Read more »

You know Ag – hindsight is 20/20, but knowing that our two franchise players are FC and that Ownership/Leadership is going to trade them – we should have jumped in front of the Astros and gone to the AL. Cargo and Tulo on the same team that also has a DH slot is probably manageable.
