Offense goes MIAmi

One has to feel just a bit bad for Kyle Kendrick – when he pitches poorly, it’s his fault, and when he pitches well, it’s still his fault. Last night’s outing was very solid, even with a mistake to Martin Prado and a near miss by Marcell Ozuna. Once again, he was done in by no run support.

1 run in two nights against back of the rotation types is embarrassing.

The Rockies just can’t hit, in this park, or on the road in general. Batting average is 58 points lower. OBP is 66 points lower. Slugging is 70 points lower. 56 more Ks. 25 fewer BB. Run scoring is 58 less, despite 2 more HRs on the road than at home (and that’s all Arenado).

Probably the right move to give Blackmon a rest, although I can’t agree just yet with Dr. C’s analysis that he should be demoted from leadoff. Part of that decision is who else do you put there. LeMahieu is the next best choice and I’m curious how he’s going to handle it. The move from 8 to 2 was definitely right, but the move from 2 to 1 could mess things up.

Now for Agbayani’s favorite topic: catcher ERA. As much as I like Nick Hundley and think he’s doing a much better job than Rosario ever did behind the plate, Michael McKenry is getting better results. 49 points lower average, 61 points lower OBP, almost 1.5 lower ERA. Hundley does throw out more runners. Offensively they have both been good, the combo ranks 6 in the majors in wRC+. Not saying McKenry should be the starter. For guys who know what they are doing – DLR, Kendrick, Bettis – Hundley is the choice. For Hale and Rusin, McKenry may be better.

For the weekend, the Marlins roll out the front of the rotation. Today marks the return of Cat Latos from the DL. The key is to jump on him early, he has had some horrendous outings this year. Also, the book is out on Justin Bour after a hot start.

After a long homestand, the “Coors hangover effect” theorists suggest Rockies team hitting will be at its worst. And so far, that’s certainly holding up on this trip to Miami. Donny, He Who Relies on Catcher’s ERA Is Sure to Make Bad Personnel Decisions. There’s always so much noise there that it’s almost impossible to find any predictive effect. Remember, in 2013 Rosario had a LOWER catcher’s ERA than Torrealba. I just flipped on the TV (hot out there doing… Read more »

McHenry was Matzeks “personnel” catcher when Tyler was dealin’ and then Walt changed it and Matzek went psycho.

Impressive disappearing job by the Rockies. Go from 3 games under .500 to 7 games under in a blink of an eye.

Rockies need players who refuse to buy into or accept the “Coors” excuses. See the ball, hit the ball.

That’s what I’m talking about! We need some dumb guys. If they’ve taken physics high school, take them off the draft board.

Whatever happened to the idea that Cargo hits before Tulo because it forces the pitcher to throw better pitches to Cargo?

Just saw the tentative Grand Junction short season roster (tentative because some of this year’s draft class may join if we can get them signed). Kyle Freeland and Forrest Wall are repeat visitors to GJ. Freeland – the guy scouts were concerned about because of stressful mechanics and Wall who had labrum surgery in HS. Thanks for the parting gifts DOD.

Wall in GJ? I don’t think so. He’s playing well in Asheville, so he’s not moving down.

15 strikeouts. 15! You’d think this is Kershaw or Nolan Ryan or something. Pathetic performance.

RMH called it…15 K’s!!
This is pathetic…not only the performances (or lack thereof) of the team but we, the faithful RWOers who continue to believe that we are really “in the hunt”. I include myself in that group.

We are a very poor excuse for a MLB franchise…and we are getting very close to the bottom 2 or 3.

Pitiful.
