Oswalt in for Possible Series Split

A day after Nicaso proved he didn’t have what it takes to justify his spot in the starting rotation, the Rockies will try to at least split the short two-game series with the Red Sox by sending Roy Oswalt out for his second start as a Rockie.

In Oswalt’s first game he struck out 11 batters in 5.0 innings, but took the loss in Washington.  It was his most strikeouts in a game since 9/1/05 against the Reds when he pitched with Houston.  Oswalt has never faced the Red Sox.

LeMahieu will leadoff as Dexter Fowler is out of the lineup today with a “sore wrist”.  He felt the pain during yesterdays beating, perhaps explaining his 0-4 at the plate.

Wow. 14 strikouts. Chicks love the swing and miss. Tyler Colvin is going to find himself back in AAA very quickly.

I’m confused by the “smoke and mirrors” statement. Its not like we’re eeking out wins with squeeze bunts, lucky hops, brash base running, the Baltimore chop or any other “trick plays” for lack of a better word. If anything, a few more real smoke and mirror stuff and we’d have a 5 game lead on the division. Maybe you don’t see the Rockies as a .500 team, I get it. But maybe a different metaphor would be more apt…what am… Read more »

“Smoke and mirrors” alludes to a magic show using illusion as their base. I am maintaining that the Rox are simply not as good as our record would indicate. What we are seeing, IMHO, in regards to their performance is not reality but an illusion. We all would like to think that Dante’s approach is rubbing off on the team…while we are clearly a better club than last year, our approach and execution at the plate during crucial and game-altering… Read more »

Given the current records in the NL West, 81-81 might win the Division.

The Rox stubbornness in not putting CarGo in center is very frustrating. When Fowler isn’t in the lineup, it forces them to use a lesser player in center (EYjr or Colvin). Why not put Cargo in center, which frees someone else like Dickerson to go to left? As I’ve mentioned before, winning with this organization is secondary.

The last year that they kept bouncing Cargo around the outfield, the rules for gold gloves got changed. Cargo felt that because the gold gloves are now handed out by position (LF, CF, RF) that he got screwed out of his gold glove because of bouncing all over the outfield that year. He is probably correct. Starting with last year, Cargo has since been assigned only to left field (his preferred position) and he regained his gold glove last year… Read more »

I can buy that, it’s apropos for this organization. Personal accolades are much more important than putting the most competitive team on the field that results in more wins. Of course if Cargo or Tulo win a gold glove award, the Rox propaganda machine can crank up that fact during the offseason in hope of selling more tickets.

So what you’re saying is that Cargo cares more about winning personal awards than putting the best possible team on the field?

yup, I agree with Cisco. As great, and I mean great, as Cargo is, it appears to me that his ego, as a player concerned about his performance, is more important to him.

Just my opinion, nothing more.

So Ego, let’s hear your theory. Why do you suppose that the one player best suited to play CF on this team (other than Fowler) isn’t there when Fowler doesn’t play? Is it because of your dislike for Dex you feel that it doesn’t matter who plays CF, that person will always be better than Dex?

I do think Cargo should move to CF when Dex is out (in fact, I think Cargo should have been made the permanent centerfielder with Dex in LF to begin with). But I don’t think it matters that much. The limitations of a Colvin or EY in CF are offset to a fair degree by the extra ground covered by Cargo in LF. As usual, the problem here is that after Cargo and Dex, we really don’t have a good… Read more »

No Cisco I agree with you. Cargo should be playing CF when William is out. If it were up to me I would have traded Willy ALONG time ago and Cargo would be our CF. I wanted Bob K. to answer my question. If personal awards are more important to Cargo than winning than I say get him the hell out of here. Go win your Gold Gloves somewhere else.

BTW Cisco, I don’t know how many times I’ve said on here that I think William is a great FIELDING CF. I just hate the way he looks when he swings. Sort of like a baby giraffe just flailing away.

Eric Young Jr. is gone Cisco, get over it brother. But since you bring him up I should mention that while playing regulary in New York he is hitting .414 with 5 RBI, scored 4 runs and has a stolen base. Can we say the same thing for Colvin during his regular playing time of late? I believe since EYJ’s departure the leadoff spot for the Rockies has hit .052. That’s awesome!

“Stubborn” is the Rockies middle name. Cargo stays in left, no matter what. Nicasio starts no matter what. Todd plays first no matter what. Etc., etc., etc. I know Todd is like God to many fans including some on this site. But it seems like every game this trip that I watched or listened to, the only time he had a productive at bat was with nobody on. Once somebody got on base he didn’t do crab. I would put… Read more »

Been wondering about something all season… any chance Todd calls it a day at the all-star break? Would save him the indignity of a possible sad late-summer (or deprive him of a pennant race, but as much as I love the Rox, I don’t see this year as that year). He could stay in uniform at home as a “special assistant” (see Vinny and WW in the past) and not miss the bromance, would only miss the pain. If I… Read more »

They’ve had some bad luck on the trip. Weird caroms off bases, screamers right at infielders… Not saying it made any difference necessarily, but it didn’t help.

Bill, you nailed it on Helton. I was about to post the same thoughts. I hate to say it, but I really think he’s done. People will say “sure, the last time we wrote him off he hit that big HR.” True. And he’ll hit another few. But remember how bad his season was last year? He’s been worse this year. Trotting a guy like that out at 1B most days is just not acceptable for a team that has… Read more »

It’s killing me to say you maybe right.Like to see him get into the top 100 for all time hits[I think he is 102/103],and the teens in doubles[think he is 21 or 20th].Would love to see him as first Rockie in HOF! With Colvin doing a Ian Stewert fade, and Pachecio appearing to have gone blind,I’m afraid Todd is still a reasonable option. Also interesting how Oswalt has already turned into Nicasio/Francis,but looks much better being crappy.

“looks much better being crappy” – I like that, Gary. Sums it up pretty well. I think Oswalt will be fine. He’s got the stuff, but he’s really rusty.

A “voice of reason and sanity” in the land of the Rox.

Keep it up…you are the person who keeps use engaged.

Well done!!

Thanks, Ed. Appreciate the comment, and I certainly appreciate your insight from the on-the-field ump’s perspective. On Helton, no way he’s going to retire midseason. I think they’ll do what they always do. Put him on the DL. That’s what they’ve done every time he’s basically played himself out of the lineup. I like Helton, and like Gary I’d like to see him hit some of those career milestones. But not at the cost of putting a bad team on… Read more »

We can’t make this stuff up fast enough!
From the DP: Former Rockie Reid Brignac, released by the Yankees, signed a minor-league deal with Colorado and will report to Triple-A. He provides infield depth.

Oswalt looks nasty! In his first two games back he has been absolutely punished on the few pitches he missed his location. I hope he gets a win in his next start. Good to have a 1-2 punch of Brothers and Betancourt once again tomorrow. Get a lead to the 8th inning, it is over. Just hope they can start getting some leads to the 8th inning!

Concerning the debate of Cargo playing CF, here’s a quote from Renck’s article in today’s DP: “The Rockies approached Carlos Gonzalez about playing center field Wednesday, and were prepared to go in that direction before deciding against it. Gonzalez has not manned any position but left field this season in an attempt to keep him healthy.” So there we have it, we can put the Cargo in CF debate to bed. One option if Dex has to go on DL… Read more »

Helton – they keep starting him regularly. I say start him only when SP averages sub 90 fastballs like a Ted Lilly. That is about once every two weeks. Helton simply cant catch up to the heaters.

Make Cuddy permanent at 1B. Dickerson everyday and see where we end up. The offense will be more consistent that wsy.

I like Pacheco, must be because long ago I moved here from NM. Very few are going to play as infrequently as he has and bat well. I don’t think there is a position for him here, but I am sure there is one somewhere. All that has been said is right on about Helton, moving Cuddy to first full time, playing Dickerson full time, etc.. However, we need to play people 5 or 6 times a week for them… Read more »
