Out of Left Field

Stephen Drew’s season came to an abrupt end last in Milwaukee late last July. He broke his right ankle and ripped the ligaments apart in a play at the plate.  Arizona’s short stop has made steady progress this spring…with some unique rehab…

Drew has been catching footballs…really.

Here’s why:

Running routes like a wide receiver allows him to keep his eye on the ball…and not think about his ankle.  There’s no timetable for his return. D’backs manager Kirk Gibson expects drew to spend some time in the minors when he is ready to play.

Funny story from Arizona’s clubhouse this spring.

The Diamondbacks have a young outfield prospect by the name of Adam Eaton…Eaton was handed an envelope with 6 checks that were each worth more than 20 grand.

Not quite…

Teammate Cody ransom quickly pointed out that those were MLB checks for the Adam Eaton that pitched for 10 years in the bigs…Including 4 games for the Rockies in august of 2009.

Eaton’s last win in the majors was memorable.

He walked ahead of Ryan Spillborghs’ walk off grand slam against the giants!

Here’s a random Adam Eaton stat;

Todd Helton has hit 6 career home runs off of Eaton…the most against any one pitcher.

Happy birthdays go out to Pete rose…he’s 71.

Greg Maddux…he’s 46.

And original Rockie Brad Ausmus, who’s 43.

The Rox plucked the catcher from the Yankees in the 1992 expansion draft; 35 picks after the Colorado took the current manager of the Yankees, catcher Joe Girardi, from the Cubs.  The Rockies first ever bench coach is being honored by the Tampa Bay Rays this season…well sort of.

Don Zimmer still wears a uniform.  He’s number 64 on the Rays roster…for his 64 years in baseball. And the rays are giving away a “zim-bear” bobble head on June 29th…you heard right, a “zim-bear”.

You can read more about the zim-bear story is here:

I know it’s kinda’ scary…

So if the teammate didn’t point out the checks were the other Adam Eaton would he have kept them? And heck I thought it was the same Adam Eaton playing for the d-backs. Great story! Thanks Mark!!!

Wow,Maddux is only 46.Why not throw a bunch of money his way to come back and team with Moyer! Bulldog was always the better pitcher, and used to routinely breeze thru 9 innings in 85-95 pitches! If he could only get thru six these days with that pitch count he would sure be an improvement over our young whippersnappers.

Would love your thoughts, please comment.x
