The Colorado Rockies will activate left-hander Drew Pomeranz (8-1, 4.20 at Colorado Springs) and send him to the mound to face San Francisco Giants’ lefty Madison Bumgarner (7-5, 3.20) with Colorado aiming to sweep the Giants out-of-town in the third of sixteen pre-All Star Break match-ups against their NL Western Division rivals. The Rockies have yet to announce a corresponding roster move, but center-fielder Dexter Fowler’s name is absent from manager Walt Weiss starting lineup for the fifth consecutive game. Colorado may prefer to keep Rob Scahill and Manny Corpas around for a couple more games at Coors Field and move Fowler to the Disabled List, which has seemed inevitable for over a week now. Game time is 2:10 pm MDT over at 20th and Blake, where you can still get a Coors Lite for less than 10 bucks.
Pomeranz, the “centerpiece” of 2011 Ubaldo Jimenez trade, has had great success for the Sky Sox in 2013. Calls for his promotion have been insistent with Juan Nicasio, Jeff Francis and Jon Garland struggling to hold-up the back-end of the Rockies starting pitcher rotation, but persistently high pitch counts have kept the BIB and his henchmen wary of another pre-mature promotion. Pomeranz has been perhaps unfairly jerked-around since his acquisition for Jimenez, who has gone 19-25/5.17 for Cleveland since the big deal. He debuted following appendix surgery in 2011, then was up and down for a horrible Colorado team that had few viable alternatives in 2012. He last pitched June 21 when he beat Tacoma, throwing 95 pitches (64 strikes) in 7 innings, giving-up 2 runs on 5 hits and striking-out 3. San Francisco’s Bumgarner lost to the Dodgers on Monday, but allowed only 2 earned-runs on 5 hits in 7 innings. He also won his three previous starts. The Rockies knocked him around for 9 runs on May 17 when they hung-on for a 10-9 victory in a back-and-forth contest.
The Friday night cast that featured Jordan Pacheco in the 2-hole at 1st-base and Tyler Colvin hitting 7th in center for Fowler is back for Colorado against Bumgarner. The Giants will roll-out the same group as Saturday.
Today’s your day to head-out to the old ball park if you like ’em cool. Temperatures will be about 78° under partly-cloudy skies. Relative humidity will hover around 42% and a slightly stiffer 7 to 8 MPH breeze will blow-in again from right-field. George Frazier and whoever is covering for Drew Goodman will handle the telecast on ROoT. Whichever guy’s left will do the radio on KOA.
