Post Trade Deadline vs STL 8/2/2015

Thanks a lot Kyle Kendrick for pitching with a rotator cuff (?),  That cost Colorado at least five games that you gave up multiple HRs.  Now the rotation is reduced to spaghetti bowl starring DLR and Rusin as the meatballs and everybody else noodles.  Today the noodle is Yohan Flande who will be lucky to go five innings.  Who will be the piggyback guy?  Aaron Laffey who will probably be DFA’ed after the game for the second time this year.

At least Kyle Parker has finally been unblocked and will be starting in LF while protecting NoDo in the batting order.  Jaime Garcia will be tossing for St. Louis who has the best home record in all of baseball.  A win today will allow the Rockies to go home with a series split in the toughest ball park this year.  The Cardinals were fortunate to steal one game in the opening game of the series when WW continued using John Axford long after he has fallen off the cliff.

If the Rox are going to be stubborn and not bring up Miguel Castro (he’s had one great outing and one awful outing at ABQ) – we should commit to Kahnle as Closer – for better or worse – for the these next 2 months. Hopefully – much more thorough thought (and corresponding $$$$ if required) will be given to the Closer position this offseason as opposed to last offseason. It’s brutal to a team to not have a good… Read more »

Watching the Mets/Nats game tonight (God – the Mets rotation will be a beast for years to come) and I’m thinking “we haven’t played either of these teams yet this year. So I look at the schedule. After this mini 3-game home stand against the Mariners, we head east for 7 against the Mets and Nats. BRUTAL.

I just saw where Patrick Saunders is reporting that Jon Gray will start against the Mariners on Tuesday. I like it. I know some say that the Rox should wait until September or April or May for the delay to “start the clock ticking”. I’m not sure what is what with that. Regardless, the MLB experience is needed now so that he will be a bit more seasoned once Todd and the Toddlers, oops, Arenado and the Adolescents come of… Read more »

To add to this Bob – we should let Tommy Kahnle Close (unless Castro is brought up).

A reason to watch! A half dozen or so Jon Gray starts. Also gives us a baseline of what to realistically expect from him next year. As Bob suggests, finally a change from the old guard to the new.

By the way, Betancourt has been really solid. A couple bad appearances back in May, but overall, still same old Betty. FIP at 2.99 now. And still hardly walks anyone. No problem with giving the old man the occasional save opp too.

I have no doubt Betty is the best option we have in the Pen at the moment – significantly more stable than Kahnle. He’s really quite amazing. But he’s not the future. I always struggle to precisely understand the service time concept. Question – is it advantageous to the Rockies (from the service time/control standpoint) to hold Castro down for the remainder of the season. I know he has spent some relatively brief time with the Jays……but not much. What’s… Read more »

Ag – another thought here – if Betty wants to pitch another year, I would be completely receptive to bringing him back, just not as Closer. As we look ahead to 2016 – I could see the foundation of the Pen being Kahnle, Betty, Castro, and Friedrich (if he doesn’t try starting again). Even though I’m quite optimistic about Castro being a Closer – it would be better for him to serve a 7th/8th inning apprenticeship first. Hopefully some of… Read more »

Thought this was funny from Saunders’ article on Gray’s upcoming start:

“Rockies management is convinced that Gray is the real deal. They don’t fear that he is the next Greg Reynolds, a husky right-hander …”

Husky?? Here’s Reynolds as a Rockie:

Saunders must be the creeper who visits anorexic girls websites.

A fan’s version of “under promise, over deliver” – I like it.

Gray has put in his time – and shown real development, especially in the last 4-6 weeks. His starts in July were good. He deserves this, and obviously the Rox need it. I’ll be watching and rooting hard for him. We’re due for a reversal in our fortunes – might as well start now.
