Rangers Part Ways With Hawpe

The Rangers released Brad Hawpe today, according to MLBTR.  He would have made $1 million, if he made the opening day roster, but his hitting from the left side of the dish, as opposed to the right side where the Rangers need, hindered his chances.  He was hitting well, .849 OPS in 23 at-bats, but couldn’t throw because he is recouping from Tommy J’s…They released him to give him a chance to be picked up by another team, with an invitation back if he isn’t able to.

Don’t realize Hawpe had TJ surgery.Too bad because his arm was maybe his best attribute.A shame since it sounds like he might have been overcoming his problems at the plate.Wouldn’t mind seeing him rehabbing at Colo.Springs-but not for one million!

The Rangers really wanted to keep him but they needed a extra outfielder and he didnt fit there for them. Hopefully he finds a home just not the NL West dont need those revenge homers!

Always loved Brad. I hope he does find a team and has great success. And no, not NL West (though he didn’t have anything when he was with the Padres!). Also, it would be nice to see at least ONE of the former Rockies hot prospects/very good players come out of the tank (see Atkins, Stewart…) Makes me wonder what the heck happened to guys like these; and I don’t think their skills were illusory. Really baffling.

Hope Brad makes it back. I think he’ll need to take a minor league contract (question: do we have anyone better to play 1B for the Sky Sox right now? Why not?) and earn his way back. I should never feel sorry for guys who made it in the big leagues. After all, I see that Brad has earned about $20 million in his career, money most of us only associate with the mega millions lottery. But he came so… Read more »

Like I said Ag,I’d take him back at the Springs on minor league rehab deal.Always seemed like a “nice guy”,and stand up teammate-and he’s 6 yrs younger than Todd.

I like Brad too. Looking back what did the rest of the league know that 1)Rox fans didn’t and 2)Rox management didn’t? Or did they know and just couldn’t do anything about it. During Hawpe’s 2009 AS season I was begging for the Rockies to trade him while value (seemingly) would have been high. We had multiple OFs that needed to play. Fowler was coming, Smith needed more time, Spilborghs still looked like a solid 4. My proposal at the… Read more »

I hear Ubaldo is scheduled to pitch Sunday against the Rockies. I’d like to see Tulo match up against him. Interesting. Ft

Interesting comments, all well-conceived. I’d like to pose a question based on this thread. What players who have been released from the Rockies (other than prospects and draft picks) have been more successful after departing than they were in Colorado? O’Dowd catches a lot of criticism (some valid) for his drafts or for the team that he hands to the manager each year. He rightfully deserves some flack for waiting too long on a guy before cutting him loose. But… Read more »

Iggy, very interesting analysis and probably spot on.I would take Francis back however.Think he has fully recovered and would fare far better at Coors than in Cincy’s band box.

I agree on Jeff Francis. However, based on the theory I posted, he’d probably only be worth using for 2-3 years at most. In reference to Prog’s comment, you are spot on, however I think that the purpose of this year’s player dump was to free up payroll more than anything. Root has been playing their Winter Meetings show (over and over and over! lol) and the message I got from it (and even Ken Rosenthal’s comments) was that it… Read more »

Iggy, I really like this coment and have been wanting to have a section on the site that “tracks” past players…it would give us a very good indication of where they were with the Rox (stats when they last played for us) and current stats for them…your comment makes me want to get it done even sooner…it all comes down to me being able to get data for the site (box/line/player) that i’ve been working on and hope to have… Read more »

Iggy, my response to O’Dowd getting rid of players at the “just the right time” is that aside from Matt Holliday and Ubaldo, the failure for the Rox to receive anything back for Hawpe, Atkins, Francis, Cook tells me they missed a bit.

I think there’s more to it roster management than simply cutting a guy when the player isn’t useful any more. A large part is moving the player during his apex and filling team needs.
