Recovery and Rebound

Tough losses are a dime a dozen.  The Colorado Rockies have rebounded from their share in 2013, and another recovery is in order after a blown a 5-run lead to the Philadelphia Phillies on Fan Friday.  Tyler Chatwood (3-1, 2.14) returns from a right-arm triceps strain to execute that chore in a 2:10 pm MDT start opposing Philadelphia’s Jonathan Pettibone (3-2, 3.70) this afternoon at Coors Field in Denver.  The Rockies are stumbling through a disappointing 10 game home stand (3-5 to-date), and aim to begin a roll before heading to Canada and the American League on Monday.

Chatwood was cruising along in the 4th inning of a June 6 loss to the Cincinnati Reds, when he encountered a “startling” pain in his throwing arm.  He finished the inning, wasted an at-bat, and sat-down for the next 11 days after allowing a single run on 4 hits with 4 strike-outs.  Tests were not startling, and after a missed turn the right-hander is anxious to resume the excellent work he’s delivered since his May 18 recall from Colorado Springs.  Pettibone is a big 22 year-old righty out of Placentia, California who’s worked his way to the big leagues after 4 seasons in the Phillies’ system.  He’s started 10 games in 2013 and lost to the Brewers in Milwaukee on Sunday, giving-up 6 runs (4 earned) on 4 hits in 5-1/3.

Jimmy Rollins will be back at shortstop for Charlie Manuel’s group, hitting 3rd with Freddy Galvis moving over to 2nd-base.  Josh Rutledge will be Colorado manager Walt Weiss’ shortstop today, leading-off as Dexter Fowler takes another day to heal his bruised ring-finger, with DJ LeMahieu back at 2nd-base. Jordan Pacheco hits 2nd at 1st; Tyler Colvin is on again for Fowler in center and Wilin Rosario is catching.

Fire-starting weather has taken a pause with the solstice approaching next week.  Game time temperatures will be in the upper 70°s under partly sunny skies with a mild 8 MPH breeze blowing across and in from left to right.  ROoT’s back for this Saturday contest with Drew and George behind the mikes.  Radio with Jerry Schemmel and Jack Corrigan is on 850 am KOA.

I’m out of town for a family wedding so a limited to response via phone. Why is Pomwrancz being kept in AAA to stretch him out while we keep Nicasio in the rotation and he can’t get out of the 6th? Drives me crazy

What are the chances the Rockies can hold onto an 8 run lead?

I had a bad feeling when we won the first game against the Nationals and sure enough we lost the series. As someone noted recently, our MO is to lose the first game and then win the series. We are back on track and with another sure win tomorrow since it’s Sunday (the opposite of the last couple of seasons), the team can head to Canada on a winning streak. Giants have already lost, so that offsets yesterday. Now we… Read more »
