Reds Rubber Match Just Got Intersting

What many (ok, RMH) were calling a throw-away for sure loss has turned into an intriguing match-up for the final game in Cincinnati.  Johnny Cueto, who was supposed to be on the mound tonight against the struggling Garland, was just scratched and placed on the 15-day DL with lat strains.  His replacement, Pedro Villarreal, is a much better proposition for the Rox, although the team can find ways to make even the worst pitchers look like Cy Young candidates at times.

Tonight’s game is the final game of a three-game road series in Cincinnati before the Rockies return home for a 10-game stretch at Coors. Tulo made Tuesdays game much more interesting with his go-ahead  two-run home run in the eighth last night.  Nicasio performed admirably, only allowing three runs on five hits over six innings.  Johnny Sparkplug Herrera proved why he is still with the 25 man team after his three hits which included a two-run double.

Eric Young Jr. will have tonight to prove he deserves to be next to Johnny on the bench as he gets the call for lead-off hitter.  Dexter is taking a planned day off for rest.  No injury, according to MLB’s Thomas Harding.

Colvin time now. To many EY starts and no pinch hitting out of him.

Eyj is not going anywhere! I hope Garland is gone soon though!

I’m beginning to believe that EYJ may be having the worst season I have ever seen following the Rockies. He is truly pathetic. Your pitcher hits a double and you swing at a 1-0 pitch with about as much authority as an old lady swinging a broom.

I know there is some complex calculation to WAR, but I’m convinced that if Giambi was on this club and EYJ was not that we would have 3 or 4 more wins right now and we’re 1/3 of the way through.

You know what you’re going to get with Garland — a 4 run deficit, maybe 5, to overcome. Dependable, consistent. Gotta bring big O to those games. Offense, that is, but I do hope he’s replaced by the big O soon.

Thank you Garland for putting up five zeroes after the four run first inning. Now don’t mess that up bullpen.

When will those covering baseball acknowledge that batting statistics are inflated in more stadiums than just Coors Field? Philly and Cincy are every bit as hitter friendly as Colorado and yet you will NEVER hear any talk of a Reds or Phils player down the road be doubted for HOF consideration like you would a Rockie.

Bob, good point. Home Run Park Factors (1.00 is average) NOT including tonight:

Coors: 1.018 (pretty much average this year)
Cincy: 1.414

Coors is still the best run scoring park (although Wrigley, Philly, and Toronto are a bit ahead so far this year … you need about a 3 year average to eliminate the noise), but it ain’t the best HR park. Remember that, MVP voters, when comparing Votto to Tulo or Cargo!

Damn, I’ve been working late this week to finish up some projects and I just barely caught the Tulo HR last night, and I totally missed the offensive explosion tonight. This is what happens when Cargo and Tulo get hot at the same time! Garland’s typical 6 innings/4 runs, or even his 5/5 efforts are more than enough when that happens.

What a waste to put in Ottavino in a eight run less. Should have let Corpas finish game.

RMH, just what I was thinking. Why would you use Ottavino in a blowout, for 2 innings too??? When Weiss went to Outman yesterday to face Votto and Bruce — the day after Bruce took him yard — I thought “he finally gets it.” Don’t base your decisionmaking on one bad event. Outman kills lefties in general, you gotta use him against those guys. And it worked. But why no Scahill/Corpas here? Why burn Ottavino for a couple days?

RMH & Ag, I was thinking the same concerning the use of Ottavino tonight. Very strange. Here’s what else was strange about the player moves made by WW tonight: -Top of the 8th Herrera (batting 8th) makes last out of inning. In the bottom of the 8th Ottavino, Fowler, and DJ come into the game. Since the pitcher is due to lead off in the top of 9th you think that either Fowler or DJ would have been inserted in… Read more »

Cisco, that one puzzled the Root announcers too. I guess Weiss just wasn’t paying attention with this one clearly in the win column. Also weird that the announcers were saying that Ottavino has moved into the mop-up type role. Not sure what he’s done to deserve that — he’s actually been really good since we got him and moved him to the pen. Clearly a better option at this point in high leverage situations than Scahill or Corpas (!). Walt’s… Read more »

Yeh Corpas coulda shut down the Reds in that bandbox, right? I think he’s goin’ back down I-25 Saturday when they, either, bring up Drew P (pronounced Droopy) or activate Francis to fill in for Chatwood. If Chatwood can’t make his bullpen session next week, I expect they’ll DH him which makes him eligible to come back on the 25th. That’s three starts. If EYjr has options, then he should go down the freeway with Corpas. Don’t know if you… Read more »

Impressive game tonight (or home run derby). Have to agree about EYJr being a drag on this team. Can’t fathom why he’s still here – can they really be that sentimental? No objective person could argue he has more than one tool. I cringe when he’s starting b/c of his spotty defense and when he was the DH against the Astros I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. It’s Colvin time. Get him up now!

20 hits and EYJ is 0 for 5. Even Garland had two hits. Not good. Not good at all.

The rockies found a needle in the haystack tonight! Win the game we were supposed to throw away, Giants lost at home, and possibly Dbacks lose tonight. Actually i rather win two in Cincinnati and lose two at home to the Astros than the other way round.

Wow, EY took an 0-6 tonite. Time to just let go, Walt Weiss. And Dan O’Dowd. And Pooter.

He is struggling right now. Not looking good. But we have all seen what he can do when he is on. He better start hitting fast or he might be sent packing.

Out of town so just got back to my hotel. Wow!! I saw the score when it was 6-4 and actually watched one at-bat. Unfortunately it was an EY out. Gotta win 7 out of 10 on this home stand. I’m a dirty pictures conspiracy guy. I always figure there is usually one or two guys on the team that only play, and are only on the team, because they have dirty pictures of the manager or the GM. This… Read more »
