Jorge de la Rosa fought hard for five innings. He seemed acutely aware that if he gave up more than 2 runs, he was doomed. A free pass to Wil Meyers resulted in a run in the 1st (damn you, Matt Kemp), and another free pass to Myers plus a Derek Norris double and Justin Upton single (nailed on the stretch attempt by Justin Morneau cutting effectively) moved the needle to 3. The Padres put an insurance run on against Brooks Brown to seal the deal, a 4-2 Rockies loss.
It’s time to change this batting order. We have the hottest hitter in the world batting EIGHTH. The current order can’t put two hits together – 7 hits, none consecutive. There is some epic rally killing going on here. Tonight marked the return of the dreaded RISP monster – O-for-8. This is a bunch of individuals padding their stats, not folks working together as a team to score runs.
I’m you, Walt Weiss. I played in a day when productive outs meant something. I’ve seen these guys hit, and it’s a thing of beauty when they do. But when they don’t, I don’t quite know what to do. Jostling the lineup seems harsh. I kind of like this L-R-L-R-L-R thing, somebody told me it was cool. These guys will recover if I just leave them alone. But they aren’t. So I wait, wait for the sound of the crowd to tell me this nightmare is over, that the offense is back.
OK, Backstrom voice off. (I love that show.) I suppose only giving up 4 runs after what we’ve seen on this road trip is progress. We didn’t get laughed out of the building tonight. Unfortunately, that was our best pitcher out there tonight. And, that was the best offensive group we can put on the field. There is no cavalry coming, no excuse for key pieces being on the DL.
Switch up the batting order, Walt. Move DJ up to 2nd so Dickerson-Tulo-Morneau-Arenado have someone on base. Yes, that drops CarGo to 7 – too bad. Move him back up when he’s a better option than one of those four. If we just sit back and do nothing, the RISP Monster will eat us alive.
We should be scoring 2 runs per inning, not 2 runs per game, with this cast of characters.
You wrote exactly what I was thinking. Its also frustrating when the walks at my count benefited San Diego with 3 runs.
Long season if we cannot fix the walk and offensive rhythm issues.
I don’t notice anybody “padding their stats.” If only! At least that might mean some production. This is a bunch of individuals failing miserably. And the patented Cargo wild flail is back. Sure was hoping that was dead and buried.
Not sure what moving DJ up to 2nd in the order would accomplish, unless you expect him to hit .400 (product of a .439 BABIP) all season long.
I don’t. I do think he’s a .300+ hitter, however. And DJ has a .444 OBP right now, meaning he’d be on base when the middle of the lineup comes to the plate. I suppose that could be twisted into the pitcher-bat-8th argument, but I’m not a fan of that either. This whole discussion (which I’m expanding right now for today’s pre-game) hinges on how the Rox hit with runners on base – do they advance people, and do they… Read more »
Meanwhile, Wilin was 4-5 with 3 RBI last night. Is he the solution to all our offensive production problems? Of course not. But it wouldn’t hurt to have him on the roster instead of Descalso/Ynoa/McKenry (choose one)
I blame the whole losing streak on Wilin.Started about the time they sent him down.
Might as well forfeit the game today. Sunday lineup with DD, McKenry, and Ynoa starting today. Including the pitcher, that’s half of the lineup that’s automatic outs.
Actually its only partly the Sunday line up and partly the Matzek line up. I don’t have any problem with McKenry catching Matzek. Hundley has show he doesn’t have a clue on how to call the game when a pitcher is having a problem getting a certain pitch over. If a pitcher is having trouble getting a pitch over for a strike it is stupid to keep calling for that pitch from him. That is exactly what Hundley did to… Read more »
And Tulo COMES THROUGH with the bases loaded!! What….oh wait…just one pitch? Really? The only out that won’t score a run, a weak pop out? Really? Really?
