Rockies & Smith Agree to 1 Year

Seth Smith and the Rockies avoided arbitration today with a 1 year agreement reportedly worth $2.415 Million.  Smith has been the subject of intense speculation as to whether or not he will be traded before spring training.  With the signing of Michael Cuddyer it would seem that Smith is the odd man out.

So is this like the NBA’s sign and trade,or are we figuring Smith is the 4th OFer?

This move says nothing about Smith staying vs. going. And for those (myself included) that have been doing some salary tabulations, Martin Prado agreed to 4.5M for 2012 from the Braves.

If anything this adds clarity on the salary for any potential teams that may have a tighter budget. I guess it came in on the lower end, so that may help his marketability. It could also make him more likely to stay, so yeah…still a question mark.

No reason to trade him for the sake of trading him. Helton is a huge question mark at 1B, so Cuddyer at 1B is a real possibility for lots of games, meaning you need someone competent — and a LH bat wouldn’t hurt — to play outfield.

Smith was just traded to Oakland for two starters, lefty Josh Outman (27) and Guillermo Moscoso (28). Both were expected to be part of the A’s rotation.

Obviously, more young pitching depth for Rockies.

What do you guys think about him being traded to the A’s? This wasn’t a bad pickup for the Rockies.

It didn’t take that too long to unfold after Smith and the Rox agreed on a contract amount for this year, did it??
