Rockies Attempt to Broom Phillies

The Rockies will send Juan Nicasio in an attempt to sweep the Phillies today.  The top two in the batting order has made a huge difference in the offensive output.  Eric Young, Jr had put the ball in play only 43 times out of 75 ABs and five of them were bunts.  Our latest discard, Dexter Fowler, is having a bad year which did not surprise the management based on their sabermetric studies.  He is still striking out too much for a leadoff hitter; 16 Ks in 56 ABs while batting .196 with a .237 OBP and .577 OPS.  He has not been a threat on the base path with ZERO SB.  On the other hand Nazty’s stats:  5 SBs, only 4 Ks in 65 ABs, .415 BA, .435 OBP, and 1.004 OPS.  Money batting 2nd has been a huge improvement over the 2-hole hitters the previous year.

Barnes/Rutledge/Pacheco all get starts. Hernandez for the Phils is kind of their Nicasio, although Nicasio probably has a little more upside even though he’s older. Hernandez is definitely the kind of guy we usually hit well at home. But Barnes, really? As Cisco pointed out, no reason to have Corey up here if you ain’t gonna play him. They simply think he can’t handle CF or RF, and they stubbornly refuse to move Cargo to CF even while Cuddy is… Read more »

Isn’t Hernandez the ultimate player to be named later? The former Fausto Carmona?

Good one, Cisco, I didn’t realize that … I thought this was a new Roberto Hernandez, not the old Fausto. So he’s an older Nicasio, not a younger one.

Off topic: Friedrich pitches 7 innings and lets up just one hit (a single) and one walk. Nice outing.

Wow, nice start from Friedrich. He and Matzek continue to tantalize us: great start, rotten start, mediocre start, great start, on and on … let’s get one of them ready for promotion by July! I think I’ll have seen enough of Nicasio (or Morales or Lyles) by then.

Attended the game. Totally random thoughts in no order: 1. Party deck is awesome. Bigger than anticipated. Money making machine. I had a CHUBurger and my wife was able to find ODells on tap. Burger was excellent. 2. Exceptionally hard fought game (even though it wasn’t always well played). Even though the Phillies are old and brittle, all of the “stars” are in the lineup at the moment and it was obvious they didn’t want to get swept. I felt… Read more »

Was it just me or did WW screw the pooch again on the use of the bullpen. With out Matty Belisle in the 8th innings we’d be above .500.Bad game for subs.Barnes looked lost in right and Rutledge booted an easy one.Baserunning errors and yada, tada, yada=crap game.
