Rockies Begin Slide Into Oblivion?

Colorado hosts Cincinnati in game two of a four-game series tonight at 6:40 MDT.  Lately the opponents have pounced on the Rockies’ staff early in the game and/or counts.  This is primarily due to the fact that the coaches have been preaching less walks and first pitch strikes.  So the opposing hitters have been sitting first pitch fastballs.  They need to mix up the pitches so the hitters cannot sit on a certain pitch in any count.  A perfect example was when Chettis walked the opposing pitcher when he has a .000 BA (0-13 with 11 Ks) in yesterday’s game.  He was behind 3-1 and the pitcher sat FBs and kept fouling off until he walked.  The game ended right there.

Another problem the Rockies are having is the power outage in the month of May especially at home.  The opponents have been hitting more HRs than the Rockies as shown in yesterday’s game when the Reds slugged five HRs.  The sinkers need to come back so the FBs are not straight as an arrow.

As we know, Drew Pomeranz and Christian Friedrich are contributing for the Padres in their rotation.  Add Jhoulys Chacin to the list of former Rockies pitching at least average elsewhere.  Chacin pitched a complete game last night for the Angels and threw over 110 pitches.  The last pitch was 93 MPH.

sdcarp has been feeding us nice tidbits on the potential draftees.  I am targeting Moniak.  sdcarp is after Ryan Groome.  A lot can change over the next week and a half.

Down on the farm, the SPs are still throwing well.  But what happens when Jose Reyes is activated tomorrow?  I’ll fall out of my chair if there is a trade by the end of the week.  Somebody has to be DFA.  I’m going with Scott Oberg.

The Braves sent Jason Grilli to the Jays today. Take a close look at the details of that deal. They understand the sunk cost concept. They mitigated the damage as much as possible and opened a spot on their roster for a young player. Take notes Rockies.

RMH – for the record, Kyle Lewis is my first choice in the upcoming draft. I do like Jason Groome….but I’m mildly concerned about “signability.”

So who gets dropped from the 40 man to make room for (ugh) Jose Reyes? Possibilities: Ynoa (the best choice) Gurka (a close second) Oberg (with better pitchers moving up in the system, they may be running out of patience with Mr. Gopherg) Matzek (I think someone really believes there’s a chance he’ll make it back, so I doubt it’ll be him) Barnes Lyles I could see Lyles getting DFA’d since some desperate team may give up something very minor… Read more »

I’ll play this game.

I think something happens to Reyes. DFA’d. Traded. Contract buyout.

Really nice article about DJ on the always excellent FanGraphs site: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/dj-lemahieu-a-quiet-transformation-in-colorado/ One of my fearless 2016 predictions was that DJ would (more or less) verify his 2015. I actually expected a very minor, entirely acceptable, regression. So his continued growth is a pleasant bonus……and it’s no longer a small sample size. It think it’s largely sustainable. Really interesting 2 weeks ahead for the Rox and the direction of the franchise. Amateur Draft and the Jose Reyes decision. The Rox… Read more »

DOD made some good deals. But it “seems” as though he became paralyzed by bad deals (or fear of bad deals) as his career progressed. I put “seems” in parenthesis because it could be that Monfort reacted to the bad deals and shut DOD down? We’ll never know. The GM needs to be given leeway to keep making deals, even after a few bad ones. If any GM is around long enough, he’s bound to make a stinker eventually. From… Read more »

Speaking of deals……I see where Marlon Byrd just can’t stay off the sauce and now is the proud owner of a 162 game suspension. The competitive Indians could certainly use Cargo (or even Ryan Raburn for that matter), so that’s another team to keep an eye on moving forward.

I bet you all a case of Natural Light that the Rockies win their next 5 games in a row. We will all be feeling good about our Rox and their 6 game winning streak going into LA.

So much for that…. I absolutely hate the way this team plays at home!

Sooo…..the Reds are a joke, but they just took 2 of 3 in our home park. Not good. I like Spilly’s comment — just too aggressive at the plate tonite. 7 HRs in your last game will do that to you. So will Coors Field (the two are related) Marlon Byrd: popular wisdom seems to be “what an idiot .. he just ended his career by going back on PEDs.” But here’s how I see it: marginal 5th outfielder type… Read more »

ahhhhhh…..so many good excuses: Manny Ramirez – female fertility drug Big Papi – vitamins Clint Barmes – deer meat Alberto Contador (cyclist) – tainted beef from China Several from various sports – my girlfriend slipped it in my food/drink Ag – you’ve hit on something that many in elite, professional sports are figuring out. PEDs today aren’t like the anabolic steroids of the late 70’s (think Lyle Alzado, Russian Olympic team, etc.). Many of the drugs today can probably improve… Read more »

I really need a new hobby. The decline has started when I had such high hopes.
