Colorado hosts Cincinnati in game two of a four-game series tonight at 6:40 MDT. Lately the opponents have pounced on the Rockies’ staff early in the game and/or counts. This is primarily due to the fact that the coaches have been preaching less walks and first pitch strikes. So the opposing hitters have been sitting first pitch fastballs. They need to mix up the pitches so the hitters cannot sit on a certain pitch in any count. A perfect example was when Chettis walked the opposing pitcher when he has a .000 BA (0-13 with 11 Ks) in yesterday’s game. He was behind 3-1 and the pitcher sat FBs and kept fouling off until he walked. The game ended right there.
Another problem the Rockies are having is the power outage in the month of May especially at home. The opponents have been hitting more HRs than the Rockies as shown in yesterday’s game when the Reds slugged five HRs. The sinkers need to come back so the FBs are not straight as an arrow.
As we know, Drew Pomeranz and Christian Friedrich are contributing for the Padres in their rotation. Add Jhoulys Chacin to the list of former Rockies pitching at least average elsewhere. Chacin pitched a complete game last night for the Angels and threw over 110 pitches. The last pitch was 93 MPH.
sdcarp has been feeding us nice tidbits on the potential draftees. I am targeting Moniak. sdcarp is after Ryan Groome. A lot can change over the next week and a half.
Down on the farm, the SPs are still throwing well. But what happens when Jose Reyes is activated tomorrow? I’ll fall out of my chair if there is a trade by the end of the week. Somebody has to be DFA. I’m going with Scott Oberg.
