Rockies Face Bumgarner Tonight

Colorado is 11-10 just 1/2 game back of  San Francisco and 1 1/2 back of Los Angeles.  Nolan Arenado has a 12-game hit streak going, tied for third best current active streak in the NL.  San Francisco put lefty David Huff on the DL and recalled a position player meaning their bullpen is reduced to seven from eight last night.  We know Yusmeiro Petit is done for this series.  The Giants have confidence that Madison Bumgarner will give them length tonight which allows them to go with essentially a six-man bullpen tonight and tomorrow afternoon.  Kerosene is a mis-match on the hill tonight against Bum.  The only question is when how many alarms will the inferno require tonight?  Relief in the rotation is coming soon; Jhoulys Chacin is scheduled to have a rehab start Thursday (4/24).  Then they will evaluate his readiness.  He will either make one more rehab start on 4/29 and be activated about 5/4 or be activated for the next start around 4/29th.

Tonight the Rockies are stacking their lineup with RH hitters save for CarGo and Morneau.  Agbayani plans to file a grievance against the Rox management for starting Brandon Barnes and Drew Stubbs tonight against a top shelf left handed pitcher.  The Rockies can only hope that the 72 degree game time temperature can heat up Stubbs’ and Barnes’ bat tonight.  The game is featured as “Free Game of the Day” on MLB.tv for out of the market viewers, meaning you don’t need subscription to view the game live outside of the Colorado/San Francisco market.

Need to work the counts and elevate Bumgarner’s pitch total so we can get to the Pen and use those killer LHed options off the bench.

Blackmon is hitting left=handers as well as right-handers. Had two homers last night. Sit him? Reminds me of when Jim Tracy sat Giambi down after he hit 4 homers in two games. His reasoning? Giambi was tired. From jogging around the bases? Why the hell do managers try to make baseball complicated?

Tyler Matzek: 5.2 shutout innings, but 5 BB, 5 K. Still, Matzek continues to restore his prospect status. Wilton Lopez aids a bullpen meltdown: .1 IP, 2 H (runs charged to previous pitcher). Asheville: Ryan McMahon, 8th HR already. Best Asheville start since Ian Stewart (ducks for cover …)

Great game.

Agbayani, yes, McMahon is off to a great start. But he’s a third baseman. What do you do with him: keep him a third baseman, or move him to another position (second or first) because we should have Arenado at third for a long time?

For the short term, you play him where he profiles best (regardless of team affiliation) to maximize his value. Ag noted above Matzak is restoring his prospect status. Trevor Story was doing the same the last time I checked in (admittedly – it’s been a couple of weeks). Rox also have a couple of mid-level catching prospects. Keith Law rated the Rox farm system surprisingly high coming into the season (I think it was in the 10-12 range), and they… Read more »

Checking in around the non NL West,

Atlanta and Milwaukee off to hot starts.
Washington and St. Louis underperforming a bit.
Cincinnati and Pittsburgh both struggling.

Way, way too early get caught up in the W-L numbers with this group, but I doubt Atlanta (injuries) and Milwaukee are sustainable. Washington needs Zimmerman’s bat back in the lineup (he’s still probably a month away).

Fun stuff to watch!
