The Colorado Rockies nipped the San Diego Padres using shutdown bullpen and four home runs for a 4-3 final. Jorge De La Rosa started for the Rockies and went only five innings giving up three runs. Matt Kemp loves JDLR and launched yet another solo HR off him while JDLR gave up two more runs on sacrifice flies. He needed 90 pitches going into deep counts and pitching with a lot of traffic. He gave up six hits and three walks while striking out six.
The bullpen team of Gopherg, Justin Miller, Jairo Diaz, and John Axford did much better. Over the last four innings, they struck out eight batters while walking ZERO batters and did not give up a single hit. Miller (2-2) was the winner; Diaz had his fifth hold; Axford picked off his 21st save.
When the bullpen took over the game, the Rockies were trailing 3-1 scoring its lone run on Nolan Arenado’s eighth HR of September. Corey Dickerson (6) and CarGo (37) nicked Padres’ starter Tyson Ross with two more solo shots. Ross has given up a major league low five HRs entering the game. He also has not given up multiple HRs in 45 straight starts. Later, Daniel Descalso hit a go-ahead homer off Joaquin Benoit in the eighth to give the Rockies a win.
It should be noted that Descalso was in the starting line up today. He entered today’s game with a 22-11 (.667) record as a starter. Descalso raised his record as a starter with the Rockies to 23-11. This stat and the home run derby between NoDo (38) and CarGo (37) are giving the long suffering Rockies fans something to watch in September.
Colorado travels along the West Coast to Seattle for a three-game set against the Seattle Mariners. You can be confident that the Rockies will be swept by the Mariners this weekend as they cannot beat any American League team anywhere. After splitting a four-game series in San Diego, they probably will leave Seattle with a 2-5 on its current road trip.
NOTE: I will be on vacation in Maui for a week leaving this Saturday. Please excuse the missing posts for games on Thursdays and Sundays. If you want to try a hand at sports writing, feel free to use the “Sound Off” column to post your game recap.
