It was so sickening to watch the Rockies Pitcher Horror Show that I had to calm my frayed nerves before I could write this article. Not much to write home except for the negatives:
- Staked to a 2-0 lead (Deej and CarGo HRs), Butler WALKS the first batter and gave back the lead to the NYM 3-2.
- Butler – 88 pitches in just 4 IP, 6 ER
- Gopherg
- Kahnle gives up 3-run shot.
- Five runs in four games, four of them on HRs.
- It can be heard all over Colorado blood curdling screams for pitching help.
- Pitchers don’t have swing-and-miss pitches.
- I don’t want to look up BB/9 stat; it has to be the worst in the majors.
- Pitchers can’t put away innings with two outs; according to DonnyDinger’s research the 2015 Rox have given up 224 two-out runs, worst in the MLB; the team record is 370 in 1999. As DD pointed out, that was in the pre-humidor and PED-tainted era..
Rox coming back home to keep the home record below .500. So it’s time to start following prospects around the Rox organization. Antonio Senzatela continues to dominate the league. Jeff Hoffman had another good game tonight. Thanks to the young men, I have a reason to continue to drink purple Kool Aid and wearing purple colored glasses while riding in sdcarp’s front row seat on the rebuild Rockies bandwagon.
I haven’t checked other scores but Rox very close to having worst record in baseball.Brewers have played better since manager change and Phillys have been much better.Rox are now a joke-and yet I watch.Classic masochistic behavior.
Phillies with 46 wins and trending upward.
Rox with 47 and trending…… well, you know.
Brewers with 48.
26 game with Nats, Mets, Dodgers, Giants, and Pirates remain. We’ll have a tough time getting to 63 wins to avoid the 100 loss season.
“Staked to a 2-0 lead (Deej and CarGo HRs),” It was Arenado not Cargo who homered in the first inning.
RMH – you don’t want to know the BB/9 stat? The other day I commented that there are a few bellwether stats – BB being one of them. But if you had only one stat to judge pitchers, and pitching staffs, on (other than wins – obviously that’s the end all and be all), it would be WHIP. Walks + Hits / IP. Think about it……doesn’t that pretty much sum up the whole story? For reference, 1.20 is a good… Read more »
carp, tanking the season usually doesn’t have the value in baseball that it has in the NFL (remember the “Suck for Luck” strategy worked out great for Indy) or even the NBA, but … I wouldn’t be bothered at all if the Phillies, Brewers, and Marlins all pass us. Get the actual #1 pick for the first time. No gambling on whether that #3 guy is really as good as the #1 guy. And right now, given the remaining schedule,… Read more »
We also have a couple of series with the DBacks, who have (a bit under the radar) been playing some solid ball and have to go to Seattle.
I think we’ve got this!
I’m going to channel my inner Gary (against myself) here and point out that there is no single magic bullet stat that explains the historic badness of the Rox pitching. I played with some numbers – if the Rox had 75 less walks, the WHIP would go to 1.42. But that’s a fallacy because if they had 75 less walks, they’d probably have 25 more hits. So let’s say 1.45 (and it’s really more complicated than that….but I’ll stop there).… Read more »
Wants some good news?
Reyes has cleared waivers and Jon Heyman reports the Yankees have shown interest.
Here’s another opportunity for Bridich. If he can unload Stubbs and Reyes and get something more than a bucket of balls and a little salary relief he will be doing well.
carp, just for fun – worst WHIP since the expansion era (1961): 1. 1996 Tigers 1.73 2. 1999 Rockies 1.69 … 9. 2012 Rockies 1.63 (this is really the worst ever given that the run scoring environment was much lower in 2012 than it was in the height of the PED era) This year’s edition of the Rockies is at 1.50. Still pretty awful, particularly since Coors hasn’t played as an extreme run scoring park this year. As for the… Read more »
You’re fitting stats to what we have.
Let’s change the paradigm. I want Vegas house odds. Give us 8 Gray/Hoffman/Freeland and only need 4 to succeed. No PAT. I want the whole enchilada.
If I recall correctly, you and I discussed the 96 Tigers staff as a comparable to this year’s Rockies staff during Spring Training. Was that the team that started the season something like 0-22?
Yes, WHIP is a much more accurate way to compare the pitching staffs than the BB/9 stat. But I look to the BB/9 stat more than I do to the WHIP because I’d rather get beaten by the hits than by the free passes. That’s why I have no problem having Bergman and Rusin pitching while getting beat up. I can live with getting beat by the other team that earned it, not by my own team beating themselves. Also… Read more »
Let’s just not blame the SP tho they deserve their fair share, but the BP (blowpen like someone said a few days ago) isn’t showing very well either. And if CarGo’s out of the mix what kind of lineup is there besides DJ and NoDo. As far as Reyes to the Yanks, that will be a salary dump. Don’t expect much in return, at least nothing that could contribute soon, anyway. Just took a look at Baseball Reference and WHIP… Read more »
Hey some good lines for the prospects last nite:
Hoffman 5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2K, 0 BB, 2.05
Freeland 7 IP, 5 H, 4K the rest zeroes, 1.13 and his first W
Tinoco 6 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 8K, 2 BB, 1.59 now is 2-0
Forest Wall 4 for 5 with a 2B
David Dahl 2 for 5, 2B and HR
Just saying and looking for a silver lining.
And there we were wavin’ Ball Throwin’ Eddie goodbye.
And maybe Boone Logan is hitching a ride to the airport with Butler.
False alarm, DL for Logan.
Thanks a lot Blowgan and Kendrick. That’s 50 games between them that they tried to pitch with their respective injuries.
Although my head may explode I’ve read every word above and actually understand most of it-I’m sober at the moment which seems to help. But in my simplistic way[no stats again Carp] just box score, the Rockies season can be summed up in Gohbergs pitching line yesterday. No control-walk two-finally throw a strike-3 run home run! Pretty much sums up the pitching and the season.
This may come as a surprise – but I disagree with the Eddie Butler back to ABQ decision UNLESS there’s something going on the background (crushed ego, puss-itis, etc.) we don’t know about.
That guy has been yanked back and forth quite a bit. We’re going nowhere. I would’ve liked to see him weather the storm. But………there may well be more to the story.
Guys (and girls), if I never post on RWO again, it’s not because I’ve given up on the Rox. It’s because I died in the Leadville MTB 100. Chasing the elusive sub 8 hour mark for 50+ masters riders tomorrow. Of course, if go sub 8, I might die drinking beer tomorrow night.
Good luck, Carp. That ride is on my bucket list.
Good luck Carp.
Ditto Carp.Would miss your input horribly.
