According to Reid Brignac, he is destined for Colorado and the waiting line for the infield. Brignac, who played shortstop for the Rays, has been picked up by the Rockies after being DFA’d by Tampa Bay. The Rockies are on the hook for cash consideration and a player to be named later.
No word on if it will come with an invite to Spring Training, or even if he will be picked up from the airport with all of the team cars having their seats full of players waiting to get on the field.
Brignac has the Herrera like ability to play 2nd, 3rd and SS as well as left. He has been in the bigs for five seasons, with a line of .227/.268/.317. He is 27 years old and not arbitration eligible.
You know what, maybe the team is expecting a bunch of injuries again so that is why they are picking him up. His line is pretty bad, so it can’t be that…
This one makes absolute zero sense to me unless the cash consideration is a trip to McDonalds. The Rays had a very hard choice (read sarcasm) Reid Brignac or someone we are familar with, Kelly Johnson. They opted for Johnson.
maybe, because it is “cash consideration and a player to be named later” they will send LaMahieu over as well as enough money to feed him at the golden arches…that would be a classic Rockies move i’d think…
Good grief. Yet another mouth to feed. Dumbest and laziest front office in the business.
yippie!We made a move,look out Dodgers.
I can’t understand this at all. My guess is that the infielders who make the team are Helton, Ruttledge, LeMahieu, Tulo, Nelson and Pacheco and that the outfielders who make the team are CarGo, Dexter, Cuddyer, Colvin, and EY. My guess is that Herrera doesn’t make the team. This guy seems to be no better than Herrera. I haven’t even mentioned Culberson, Wheeler, and Arenado. So, what’s the point of adding this guy? Really, what’s the point of adding anyone… Read more »
Remember Brandon Wood last year? Same thing. Once highly-touted prospect (he was as high as # 17 on the Baseball America list), now minor league depth. Actually, I don’t see any other SS at the AAA level, so write him in as the starter in the Springs.
Agbayani, I thought that I saw that he is out of options, so can we aumatically send him to AAA without first exposing him to the other teams (they may not want him)? Do we still have Field (or Fields, I can’t remember which) in the system? He could be a AAA shortstop.
Tommy Manzella could also be a AAA shortstop.
I don’t get it, unless he’s got mad clubhouse skills.
All I can come up with is that the Rockies want flexibility to trade an infielder or two for a starting pitcher as the opportunity arises. That’s not much of a reason to do this deal.
All it costs is per diem since salaries don’t kick in until the season starts. It looks like more AAA fodder tho.
Oh, and the Sky Sox get no say in who plays there, Julian. Just another minor piece on the chess board even if it looks like the Rox are loading up on pawns.
