Rockies Pick Up Oswalt

As announced by several media outlets, and Oswalt himself, it looks like the Rockies are picking up a new picture. Roy Oswalt will join the minor league team in extended spring training, and then apparently join the team in a few weeks if all goes well. At least, that’s what all the speculation is. It’s hard to know fact from fiction this early, but the truth is that this could be a bolster to a rotation is starting to show a few cracks at the seams.

one tweeter made a good point: Oswalt was better than Francis in their primes, so Oswalt will be better than Francis at end of career. good signing with nothing to lose and definitely better than Aaron Cook’s signing.

I actually made this suggestion—-about 3 or 4 years ago,now not so excited but no downside I guess.Just seems that Oswalt must be just as desperate as the ROX,if he signs here out of 30 choices. If he can be as good or better than Millwood was, then I would be very pleased with this unforeseen signing!

I love this – because it’s essentially no risk to the Rox. If he has some life left in his arm, good for us. If he doesn’t, no harm done.

RMH and scdcarp, you guys have got it right. No risk here, and here’s the interesting thing: based on what the recent Oswalt has done (I’m thinking post-Astros, so 2011 and 2012) I’d project him as at least our third best starter. In fact, probably our # 2 starter behind Chacin. He actually had quite a bit left in the tank last year with the Rangers. It was only about 60 innings, but striking out a batter per inning while… Read more »

Obviously I know who he is…but can someone in cliff notes format fill me in on his last 5 years or so? Did he just “get old and lose it” (by lose it I mean ‘not in his prime any more’-no disrespect).

Thanks!

TJ, there’s a really good interview with Oswalt on fangraphs — just google Oswalt fangraphs and you’ll see it. It’s called Q&A: Roy Oswalt, Evolution of a Career. What I like about it is that Oswalt isn’t in denial about what he can/can’t do anymore. He can’t throw 95, so his pitch mix has changed, and he seems to have an idea of how he can still succeed (not excel or even dominate like he used to) with what he’s… Read more »

The Rocks needed another arm. Had hoped they’d trade for the equivalent of a young Oswalt. The rotation will include Chacin, Pomerantz and Chatwood soon. The unknowns: will DLR stay healthy and regain stamina and form? Will Nicasio develop his 2dary pitches in the Springs or morph to the bullpen – he won’t stay where he is as he is. Are there two good enough starters to get us to the playoffs between Garland, Francis, Oswalt and guys in the… Read more »
