Colorado got their offense going against a very good pitcher in Michael Wacha yesterday, but the pitching was non-existent in a 13-7 loss to St. Louis. Tonight they go against another ace in Gerritt Cole at Pittsburgh. Eddie Butler toes the rubber tonight in a 5:10 MDT tilt. CarGo continues to bat fourth despite being absolutely non-existent for over a month, save for his two-hit “outbreak” Sunday. CarGo needs to move down to 7-hole.
At the time of writing, the Pirates leads 1-0 after an inning and a half. Cole has been the beneficiary of baseball gods, getting two double plays off line drive right at an infield mitt.
Harrison Musgrave promoted to ABQ. Interesting as Freeland is still at AA.
I have disagreed with carp that Eddie Butler belongs in the pen for a while. I was waiting for Butler affirm my belief. That’s two really good starts last two times out. Butler stays in rotation until he disproves me.
76 pitches, 55 strikes to get through 6 innings. That’s pretty darn efficient. Still struggling with the 3rd time through the lineup (virtually all young pitchers do). Let the record show I want to be proven wrong.
Gerrit Cole is a really good pitcher. The Pirates are a really good team. It’s easy to get hung up on “what if’s,” but that’s baseball. Let’s see if we can get one tomorrow.
Stu Cole gets tagged with TOOTBLAN. Never wave anybody home on a direct line drive one hopper to shallow LF who has both maximum strength and accuracy.
Read a blurb (I think it was a MLB.com tweet) that Lyles is in fact being called up for Pen duty. I find this interesting. Why not? I’ll confess to being a little skeptical because control has been his issue, but in several of his early starts back in April his 1st inning FB velocity was 95+. Good for the Rox for stepping out of the box a bit with this one.
Harrison Musgrave – rough introduction to AAA tonight — gave up 4 HRs. Ouch. As to why they skipped Freeland: the Rockies have done this before, keeping their better prospects in AA with an eye toward a straight promotion to the big leagues (Hoffman is kind of an exception here)
Who took the photo of Butler in the bullpen in pre-game? I was there watching it myself!
I got this photo from Twitter.
One of the more frustrating games I’ve ever witnessed. Bucs fans agreed with me that the Pirates were lucky in that the Rockies squared up a lot of baseballs that went right at someone. DJ’s first liner to first is a double if there is no runner being held on. His second could possibly have been extra bases as well if the first baseman is holding a runner on. Difference in game came down to a botched pickoff attempt at… Read more »
Not to mention that they had two or three balls driven that would have been at least a double but went straight to CF without havng to move Instead of gappers.
For me the most frustrating part is CarGo is just awful at the plate being almost oh for one month with Ks weak rollovers. Im at the point I want him as 4th outfielder and let Raburn be everyday LF.
Chatwood vs. Niese. Bettis vs. Nicasio. If we’re ever going to beat the Pitates, it’s going to happen in the next 2 games.
Oh brother – JDLR to be recalled and pitch Tuesday vs. (drumroll please), the Red Sox. Otherwise known as one of the most patient offensive juggernauts in the AL. No way this ends well.
