Rockies Seek to End Slide

If there is one thing that the Rockies are consistent this year, it’s avoiding long losing streaks. The longest slide so far this year is four and the Rox are currently on the four-game losing streak. The Rockies will send Tyler Chatwood against Stephen Strasburg tonight at 5:05 p.m. MT in the nation’s capital.

The roster and lineup was shaken up a little bit in an attempt to recharge the team. Corey Dickerson was called up and Logan Kensing who made a cameo appearance for two third of an inning Wednesday night was designated for assignment. Dickerson was an eighth round pick in 2010 who brought a big rake with him throughout the minor leagues. It was only last year that he was playing at high A Modesto. One year later, he’s putting on his big league uniform tonight wearing #6. Even more impressive was that he was still in low A Tri-Cities when Tim Wheeler set AA home run record. Earlier this year Corey had multiple hits in eight straight games with the Sky Sox. The final test for his big rake is in the major leagues. One criticism he has is that his defense is not that great, but we can presume it is better than EYJ.

The good news tonight is that Dexter Fowler returns to the lineup with his banged up finger in the familiar leadoff spot. Josh Rutledge is playing at shortstop with his double play partner DJ LeMahieu. The lineup order has returned to normalcy sans Tulo.

In other team news, Rafael Betancourt threw to live batters today in the bullpen session with Walt Weiss and Bill Geivett looking on. Edgmer Escalona also did some light throwing. The hope is that Betancourt can return as soon as next week. Jose Valverde of the Tigers was DFA’ed today. It will be interesting to see what team is willing to take a shot with him.

Valverde has been terrible of late. 13+ ERA in last 8 outings. Any team that picks him up in next 10 days will not only need to give the Tigers something but also pay, what I presume is, a substantial salary. After 10 days I believe the Tigers have to pay his whole salary, less what any team that picks him up is willing to pay. I don’t think he’s coming here. Not sure who would want him as he… Read more »

I wonder if the Rockies are having 2nd thoughts about Walt Weiss. As Ag mentioned above he made a rookie mistake in bringing in Corpas in the 7th in a tie game And he’s made more than one. And here is what Terry Francona said about Jason Giambi…”I can’t begin to tell you the amount of respect that we have for him. I’ve been around a lot of good — I’ve been so fortunate, I’ve been around so many good… Read more »
