Those 8 runs the Colorado Rockies scored Sunday? Well that was Sunday and that was St Louis. The Colorado bats were silent again last night in a 9-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field in the Windy City. The Rockies faced Cy Young for the 3rd time in 4 games. Travis Wood (4-2, 2.03) played the role this time, throwing 7 shutout innings at the Hitless Wonders, who in the interest of honesty, did manage 2 hits off of Wood. Juan Nicasio had rough 1st and 2nd innings. Alphonso Soriano took him deep with David DeJesus on in the 1st. In the 2nd he allowed doubles to Welington Castillo, Wood, and Starlin Castro as the Cubs went-up 5-0. Nicasio threw 23 pitches in the 1st and 22 in the 2nd, but then settled in and lasted 6, for a total of 94 pitches (59 strikes). Adam Ottavino and Wilton Lopez finished for Colorado, each allowing 2 runs on 3 hits.
They’ll attempt to score tonight against Chicago right-hander Carlos Villanueva (1-2, 3.02), who appears to have a dashing handle-bar mustache to go with a soul patch and full beard. Villanueva went 6-2/3 in a Cubs loss to St Louis last Wednesday, surrendering 3 runs on 7 hits. Lefty Jeff Francis gets the start for the Rockies. Francis took another loss in Thursday’s rain-delayed loss to the Yankees. He was pulled after the delay, going 4 and giving-up 2 runs on 4 hits.
Dexter Fowler is back in Walt Weiss’ lineup tonight, with Eric Young Jr moving to right-field and Charlie Blackmon taking a seat. Scott Hairston’s in right for Dale Sveum, swapping-in for Nate Schierholz in a barely shuffled Chicago order.
Francis will get nice weather for a change this evening. Clear skies and 80° temperatures are expected at Wrigley at game time. Relative humidity will be 50% and the wind will blow straight-out at 11 MPH. George, Drew and Marc will have the TV on RoOT, and Tracy Ringolsby’s sitting in for Jack Corrigan with Jerry Schemmel on KOA 850 am.
