Rockies Trivia Tidbits

The baseball movie MONEYBALL got shut-out at the Oscars recently.

Last year, the Rockies were shut out 8 times; 5 times by teams in the NL West.

Colorado shut out an opponent 7 times.

In those 7 wins, the starting pitcher went the distance twice.

UBALDO JIMENEZ got his 1st win of the season by shutting out the Dodgers in LA on June 1st.

And in April, JHOULYS CHACIN twirled the 1st complete game shut out of his career, when he blanked the Cubs at Coors Field.

JIMENEZ and JASON JENNINGS share the Rockies career mark of 3 complete game shut-outs.

The Rockies are counting on DEXTER FOWLER to be on the NL’s top center fielders in 2012; and here’s why.

Ya’ know who led the Rockies in hits, extra base hits, and runs AFTER the all-star break last year?

Yes DEXTER FOWLER.

And FOWLER played in FEWER games in 2011 than 2010 or 2009!

DEX has 39 triples in his young career…just 10 behind the club’s all time leader, NEFIE PEREZ.

8 different Rockies played at least an out defensively at second base in 2011.

Including catcher JOSE MORALES.

The only man to exclusively play 2nd? That would be current Dodger MARK ELLIS.

MARCO SCUTARO is in line to be TULO’S double play partner this year.

The last time SCUTARO started more than 100 games at 2nd was with Oakland in 2004.

And he led the AL in fielding percentage at 2nd base that season!

Recently acquired Rockie JEREMY GUTHRIE has been the Orioles opening day starter 3 of the last 4 years.

Two years ago the O’s opening day starter was former Rockie KEVIN MILLWOOD.

And GUTHRIE was Baltimore’s winningest pitcher in 3 of those seasons.

Colorado got GUTHRIE ‘cuz he has thrown at least 200 innings in each of the last 3 years.

And he pitched well in his lone career start against the Rockies on 6/9/07; throwing 8 innings and leaving with the game tied at 2.

No current Rockie had a hit off him in that outing in Baltimore.

Colorado won that game 3-2 with a 9th inning run.

In an unrelated note- Buster Olney of ESPN ranks the Rox early season schedule as the 4th toughest in the NL. Twenty-two of their first 37 games are against teams with winning records in 2011.

However Cisco Kid, 18 of the team’s first 27 games…yes, 2/3rds…through 5/6 are at COORS FIELD.
The club’s first 4 road series are 3 @ HOU, MIL, PITT, and SD.

Well, if we start off slow this season we will have that schedule to blame! I believe that our new facilities are part of the reason we started out so great last year…Salty Stick is so much closer to other teams, no long bus rides around…they really came out of the gate in 2011 and swept through some teams ON THE ROAD that was nice to see – of course, we all know what happened after that – but they… Read more »

As I stated in the ROOT schedule thread,IMO the last 35 days are really brutal.Lots of our west div.enemies[naturally],as well as some tough east and central teams. And as oppossed to the last couple of seasons we don’t have an overload of home games.I admit I’ve only given cursorey view to the overview but the 2/3’s at home early is a chance to build a winning season.

I just watched a short clip about Dex on MLB.tv. It didn’t say too much, just that Dex is building on his success and all that.

According to Ken Rosenthal, the second wild card/play-in game is a go this year. That makes for some really interesting times. “Playoff” chances increase significantly for lots of clubs, including the Rockies. Suddenly you’ve got to be thinking how to get that pitcher who can get you that extra win or two, etc. Let’s see how the Rockies respond.

Making it as a wild card is alright, but its time this team won a division flag. Honestly if the Rockies won the division I wouldn’t mind a first round loss.

The extra wild card is great for the team that gets it. It stinks for the team that would have been the lone wild card previously as they are suddenly reduced to a one-game play-in. I’m still not convinced this is a good thing.

I agree with Bob…not sure the one game play-in is a good thing. As always I am optomistic about the upcoming season (gotta love spring when everyone has a chance).
