Rockies v Angels – Divine Help to Stop the Skid

After battling pneumonia for most of the last 10 days I posted today my first Doc’s Musings in a while. In that I took a little review of the current state of the pitching. I point out there that Kyle Kendrick isn’t as bad as ERA says he is. But he is almost that bad.

For a man who has 27% of his fly balls going over the wall facing the Angels might not be a good thing.

Yes, they are 13th out of 15 in runs and just 11th in homers, but they have a lineup filled with guys who can take you deep. And sadly, I think we all know the chance of Kendrick going a whole game without giving up a homerun is pretty small.

Opposing him tonight is C.J. Wilson who has pithed well against the Rockies in his career, even throwing the best game all season at Coors in 2012, when no one threw good games. Wilson had slumped the past two years but is off to a good start with his 2.70 ERA. The lefty moves the ball well from side-to-side, and doesn’t overpower hitters, but still manages to get outs and strikeouts when needed. He is a tough match for a Rockies team that isn’t just riding a 9 game losing streak but has looked so bad on both sides of the ball that it feels like a 19 game streak.

Tonight’s Lineup does have one surprise. Carlos Gonzalez man’s the third spot, ala 2013. It isn’t 2013. But the offensive performance of this team so far has been so disappointing moving CarGo there can’t really hurt. We all know he is a very good hitter. You don’t win a batting championship if you are not. And 2013 he was hitting better on the road than home. But after missing basically a season and a half (yes, he played last year but that was not the real CarGo, that was a guy so beat-up he had to cheat on every pitch to try and make contact), it may just be a while before his timing comes back. Early in the season hitting .197 is bad, but a 12 out of 16 would put him back where he ought to be.

Playing in the AL park Wilin Rosario gets to man his natural position – hitter.

Cargo is absolutely worthless right now at the plate. 0-6 with RISP and two outs for the year and he power-swings at the first pitch, shatters the bat into a lame ground-out. His phenomenal bat speed is so often wasted, impatiently pounding bad pitches into the dirt.

Guess who beat Albuquerque today … Alex White!

Well, it was only Albuquerque…

My goodness. Cargo is living the movie GroundHog Day, repeatedly doing the same thing–swinging wildly at the slider away with two strikes.

And Kendrick is getting better as the game goes on! When will the clock strike midnight on this Bizarro World? Is Scott Oberg around?

Some more fine baserunning from LeMahieu, who is now 1 for 4 in stolen bases.

DO NOT pitch to Trout. DO NOT pitch to Trout. DO NOT pitch to TROUT. Not Kendrick. Not Friedrich. Not anyone. Make Albert beat you.

Q. What is Cargo hitting this year against lefties?
A. A cool .100

And so Betty and Hundley falling asleep on Pujols results in what will likely be the winning Angels run. The difference between a winning team and a losing team right there.
