Rockies v Royals (Wrap)

Drew Pomeranz looked very good in his 2nd start of the Spring Training season, going three innings and only giving up two hits and one walk.  He also had three strikeouts before leaving the game.  Not so great was the 4th inning featuring Josh Outman.  Outman was abused by the Royals bats, giving up 4 runs on 5 hits in the first inning alone.  He finished the day after three innings with four earned runs, six hits, one walk and one strikeout.  There were some great defensive plays as well, with Casey Blake and Dexter Fowler putting on a show in the field.  The Royals also had some nice defensive plays, turning 4 double plays at my last count, killing the Rockies momentum at every turn.

Hector Gomez had a nice hit in the ninth, a double shot to left field, but came up limping before reaching the bag.  He is listed day-to-day with a groin injury.

Pomeranz gets the ball to begin the game today, squaring off against Felipe Paulino.  The Rockies traded Paulino to the Royals in the middle of last season after a difficult beginning, going 0-4 with a 7.36 ERA in 18 relief appearances.  Here is your home team line-up:

CF Dexter Fowler
2B Johnny Herrera
1B Jordan Pacheco
DH Jason Giambi
C Ramon Hernandez
RF Tyler Colvin
3B Casey Blake
SS Chris Nelson
LF Tim Wheeler
LHP Drew Pomeranz

Would be nice to see the team learn how to scratch out runs instead of hitting into GDPs all day, Spring Training or not.

Just to expand. Its the bottom of the 6th, down by 4. You’ve grounded into 3 DPs already on the day. Your leadoff man gets on base. Fowler, projected to be your leadoff or 2 hole, is up. I’d bunt the runner over and see if Fowler himself can’t get on too.

Instead, result was another GDP.

It’s frustrating when GIDPs happen, ST or not but remember what happened to Pujols last year? He GIDP’ed a ton in the first month before finally getting into form.

LOL. I know, I know, but tell me it wouldn’t be nice to be the team putting a 5-0 whooping on rather than receiving…

The problem with me…I can never be critical of the Rox..I love them too much!! Any other team I can break down issues..I always wear my “Rox colored glasses”!!!

bseus..you are dead on…this is not to win games as much as it is rating players. I look at Pomeranz’s outing and see what we are expecting from all the hype. Regardless of performance, players separate themselves either to come to Denver or “develop”. Lots of solid performances from those who we expect so I am still seeing some positive signs. If it was the week we were leaving for Houston, I’d be considered..right now I am optimistic!

Did anyone else see the 30 Clubs in 30 Days for the Cubs? Ian looks good in a Cubbies uni and Harold Reynolds says he’s expecting big things this year from him. He looked happy. Maybe playing in Colorado isn’t as great as we all thought it was. I have a feeling we’ll be sorry we let him go. Book it now, Ian has a better year than any 3B on the Rockies roster this year! You watch!

I’ll take that bet Egossage – Loser buys the winner opening day tix, 2013? I could not have less faith in Stewart as a big leaguer. Mentally weak with a big, looping swing. Good riddens.

He’s going to get to play everyday and won’t be pulled out of the lineup for going hitless. He will have a better season than Blake, Arenado or whoever plays 3b for us.

E.G., I hope you are right because I like the Cubs, but I don’t think so.

First: spring training records mean nothing! Less than nothing if that’s possible. Second: Pomeranz seems like he knows what he’s doing. I’m pretty confident about him. Third: Moscoso got hit hard yesterday, Outman today. I don’t expect Moscoso to be useful. Outman? I don’t know how he’s fared this spring against lefties vs. against righties, but his history has LOOGY (“left-handed one out guy”) written all over it. He’s eaten up lefties, been killed by righties. He may have value,… Read more »

I ever had faith in the fly ball pitchers like Moncoso. I’m betting on Chatwood, White, or Moyer for the final rotation spot. That’s assuming Guthrie, Chacin, Pom, and Nicasio staying healthy and locking up the first four rotation spots.

And White staying out of bars, and Moyer staying out of the training room!

Jaredean,Hey, are we going to be able to have box scores,or a link to them when we get to the regular season. My finances dictate I have to cancel the Post, and I’m old school enough that box scores speak to me.Just asking, as the site is terrific.

Gary you can still get the box scores with the DP on line, or you can get them at MLB site. That is where I see all the box scores each day. That being said, I would much rather see them here also.

If you have an iPhone/iPod/iPad, I highly recommend the MLB 2012 app.

Skip the MLB.tv option unless you live outside CO because Rockies video feeds are blacked out.

I’m predicting here and now that Jamie Moyer becomes our #5 starter…I was going with White until the report of his 0.17 breathalyzer came out. He told the Rox he had 2 drinks…ya, right. He made an incredibly stupid decision to drink and drive…that can be overcome, as the Rox front office said. However, no person with an IQ over 33 will believe he had only two drinks. The undeniable fact becomes clear…he lied through his teeth to O’Dowd and… Read more »

I don’t think that one night’s indiscretion should be dispositive as to whether White can become an effective major leaguer. What will be more important is what he does on the mound over a long period of time. I’m still hopeful that he can become a major league starter.

Certainly, the first view of Moscoso/Outman hasn’t been so great. Hopefully, they’ll improve.

It wasn’t the drinking and driving…it was the lying to management and the team that wil do him in.
