With Monday’s off-day the Rockies are hoping they don’t lose any momentum they picked up in Washington before flying into Boston. The team won their last two against the Nationals and are set to play two against the Red Sox at Fenway. With some disappointment from the Rockies faithful fans, Walt Weiss didn’t opt to skip Nicasio’s spot in the rotation with the off-day and give the ball to Oswalt and Chatwood for the short series. Sadly, the weakest link in the rotation will be put to the test against the AL East’s top team. The one bright spot is the team will face Ryan Dempster, who has lost his last three outings.
The two games in Boston will wrap-up the teams 10 game road trip that saw them get swept in Toronto and split a 4-game series in Washington. The Rockies haven’t been to Fenway since the World Series in 2007.
The lineup will feature Corey Dickerson hitting DH. Dickerson, the Rockies rookie that was called up for the National’s series, went 2-4 with two-doubles in his debut.

Hey Pooter, your boy is hitting pretty well in NY:
.364 | .417 | .500 | .917
Not bad at all…and that’s over 24 plate appearances, not a huge sample, but over 27 PA’s with the Rockies (at the end) he was:
.182 | .217 | .182 | .399
Plus, he’s error-less, which is a good sign as well 🙂
Good little article about him here:

I’m glad for EY. I guess that thing about a change of scenery holds true sometimes! Wonder if it will continue.
For him I hope it does…I’ve always loved the kid and wished he would have figured it out here…I think the Mets are a great place for him…
Good for EY! But if he’s “part of the Mets outfield future” as the article suggests, then the Mets have a long ways to go …
We have thrown too many games away including tonight by having too long of a leash on garland, Francis, and now Nicasio. We are give games from the mid point of the season. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know Nicasio has to be out of the rotation.
After tonight, I think that we’re going to see Pomerantz get called up from CS, and Nicasio get sent down. For the moment, they’ll keep him as a starter because they need him to be stretched out because there’s not anyone else ready to be a major league starter, so if there’s an injury, they’d need him to come back up. But over time, I see him being turned into a reliever. Speaking of CS, check out the start that… Read more »
Unfortunately I figured this game would be something like this. For the last month or close to it both Francis and Nicasio have been teetering. They finally dumped Jeff although he’s still in their system and O’Dowd or Geivett or whoever makes these decisions is being stubborn and are keeping Drew down on the farm and Nicasio gets beat up. Didn’t Pomeranz have some kind of off the field problem in the off-season? Maybe they are trying to teach Drew… Read more »
Why Nicasio is a marginal major league pitcher: Throws fastball 75 % of the time. (Compare a good pitcher with a better fastball: Oswalt, career: 64 %) Avg fastball velocity: 92 in 2013, down from 94 in 2011. Average is 91. All that adds up to a strikeout rate of about 6 per 9 IP. No swing-and-miss pitch. A slightly better than average fastball, average control, very weak secondary pitches. I think he can be a decent reliever (maybe Escalona… Read more »
Tracy R mentioned in the post-game that an advance scout told him this past weekend that the Nicasio/Boston matchup was a really bad one. Boston is a great fastball hitting team and the most patient hitters in baseball. If others know this fact, why doesn’t the Rox brass know this?
They do. They just don’t care.
