Rockies Welcome in Boston Dodgers for Three

All eyes will be on Coors tonight as the “new look” Dodgers will put Becket on the mound for the first game since the “big trade” against the Rockies.  This is also the first game on Colorado’s 7-day, 6-game homestand vs. LAD (6/27-29) and vs. SD (8/31- 9/2).

The Dodgers picked up a massive salary haul on Saturday as they took on Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and Josh Beckett in a nine-player trade that will add a quarter of a billion dollars to the Dodgers salary.

• Left-handed pitcher Jeff Francis will make his 17th start of 2012 tonight. This will be Francis’ 18th career start against the Dodgers, against whom he is 5-4 with a 3.46 ERA (101.1 ip, 39 er).

• Francis will face newly acquired right-hander Josh Beckett tonight. The veteran right-hander is making his Dodger debut. This will be his fifth career start at Coors Field, first since 2005.

This is the fifth of six 3-game series the Rockies and Dodgers will play against one another in 2012. The Rockies have taken each of the last two series 2-games-1. In fact, three of the Rockies 10 series wins this season are against the Dodgers. Despite that the Rockies are still 6-6 vs. LAD this season, as the Dodgers swept a 3-game set at LAD 5/11-13.  The Rockies are 75-85 all-time vs. LAD in Denver.

ON THE FARM: With approximately one week left in the Minor League season for the Rockies Minor League teams, the Rockies farm teams have posted the second-best combined record among all Major League organizations…the Rockies seven MiLB teams are a combined 401-338 (.543). Only Seattle’s .549 winning percentage is higher. Colorado’s Double-A Tulsa Drillers and Single-A As heville Tourists have already clinched playoff berths in their leagues…the Triple-A Colorado Springs, High-A Modesto Nuts and Rookie Level Grand Junction Rockies are all still fighting for a postseason spot with just one week remaining. Among the Rockies seven Minor League teams, only short-season Tri-City has a sub- .500 winning percentage.

Happy thought of the day: as this miserable season winds down, as we watch the Dodgers try to buy a pennant, we may very well be seeing 3 young position players emerging as long-term starters — Colvin, Rosario, Rutledge. Not bad for one year.

Plus 3 affordable rookies show they are perfectly capable of being “bench” or part time players in Nelson, Pacheco and LeMahieu. Really, a smart GM could put together a very capable and EXTREMELY affordable 12 or 13 hitters (aside from Tulo and Cargo) for 2-3 years and be able to put every last dime into pitching. I keep thinking with hindsight how ill advised it was to overpay Scutaro and Cuddyer to play at a level that LeMahieu/Nelson and Colvin… Read more »

The Boston Dodgers … LMAO. The saddness does continue for me though. One of my all time favorite 1st baseman continues to add insult. It was bad enough seeing him go to Boston … something I never understood … but now he comes home but in Dodger blue. It will be interesting to see how the Boston Dodgers finish the season. Spending big money didn’t work for the Red Sox. I wonder if it will work for the Dodgers? I… Read more »
