Roenicke, Putnam, Moscoso and Fields Gone

On a day that could have included the announcement of a new manager, ends with the announcement that the team will say goodbye to four of their 40 via waivers.

ZACH PUTNAM was picked up by the Cubs, GUILLERMO MOSCOSO went to the Royals and JOSH ROENICKE & THOMAS FIELD both go to the Twins.

Roenicke, in 63 relief appearances, posted a  3.25 ERA with 5.5 K/9, 4.4 BB/9 and a 50.2% ground ball rate.  Field only played two games with the team, but he put up a .246/.315/.400 line with Sky Sox.  Moscoso posted a 6.12 ERA with 8.5 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9.  Putnam also only played a couple with the team, posting a 4.15 ERA with 7.3 K/9 and 4.0 BB/9 in 60 2/3 innings with the Sky Sox.

In other news the team announced that they have outrighted right-hander Carlos Torres.  They also picked up the contract of right-hander Josh Sullivan and reinstated Todd Helton, Juan Nicasio, and Christian Friedrich from the 60-day DL.

I’m blown away that the team let Roenicke get away. Jonathan Sanchez is still on the 40 man roster. Couldn’t he have been waived? How about Edgmer Escalona, Rob Scahill, or Will Harris? Aren’t all of them less valuable than Roenicke? Could Giambi have been waived or Culberson? Thomas Field isn’t much of a loss, although he may one day have a major league career. But we’re already strong in middle infield, so I could see him never making the… Read more »

Julian, you need to learn to trust in BIB DOD. He didn’t get that title for no reason. I mean look at his record, it’s obvious he knows exactly what is going on.

Here is the 40 man roster per the Rox website. You can see Jeff Francis, Giambi and Jonathan Sanchez are not on it, as they are Free Agents currently. I don’t really understand the rules, currently there are 4 empty spaces. Not sure why they had to remove Roenicke at all. I’ve never understood the 40 man roster rules, nor the various contractural gymnastics that go on at this time of the year. Roenicke’s numbers were (obviously) really good this year, especially given the circumstances. But I was skeptical, sort of worried that it was a combination of “smoke and mirrors” and generally good timing (coming into lopsided games when the opposition may have been more focused on getting to the post-game clubhouse buffet than working a 12 pitch at bat).… Read more »

There was an article in today’s Denver Post about players who would have to be added to the 40 man roster or exposed to the Rule 5 draft: Frazier, Gardner, Huston, and Wheeler. So that may explain who is expected to fill in the last 4 slots. I still would have exposed some other players before exposing Roenicke. I don’t get it. And if our 4 players got snapped up so quickly, could they, or any other marginal players have… Read more »

Roenicke turned down the contract offer from the Rockies. That’s the main reason behind the waiver. There’s probably other upcoming roster moves involved that we’re not privy to. Too bad he had to go but I have to resist the knee-jerk reaction until the smoke settles. There’s a lot of time in the Hot Stove season so I’m content to be patient. Can’t win nor lose any games until April. BTW if anybody is interested, the local SABR chapter’s annual… Read more »

ESPN is reporting that the Indians have traded Esmil Rogers to Toronto for SS Aviles and a minor leaguer. Aviles was just traded to Toronto from Boston for manager Farrell. Aviles was Boston’s starting SS this past season. My question is, if the Indians can get this much for Rogers, why did the Rockies give him away?

I was just going to ask the same question!! Or why can’t the Rockies get SOMETHING for a guy like Roenicke. Or why couldn’t they get something for Al Alburquerque a few years ago?

Saw this trade as well. Aviles is a serviceable veteran player. There was another player in the trade as well. The Indians take Esmil for half a year, flip him for 2 guys (1 of which is a proven commodity) – AND – this probably allows the Indians to send Astrubal Cabrera to the A’s for one of their young, promising SPers.

The reason is very simple, DoD is an idiot. Why try to get anything for Scuturo when we can trade him to the Giants for the immortal Culberson (or whatever his name is). Everybody says that’s all he could get. Well perhaps that’s all he could get at 3:30 AM or whenever he decided to trade him. One of the reasons given for the releasing of Moscoso was that he was a flyball pitcher. Wasn’t he a flyball pitcher last… Read more »

Putnam and Roenicke were decent relief depth for a team that is desperate for pitching. These two guys are better pitchers than Escalona, Harris, Scahill and Sullivan – and those guys remain on the roster. This makes as much sense (no sense what so ever!) as the 2 FOR 1 deal with Hamels and Lindstrom going to Baltimore for Guthrie. Field and Moscoso don’t hurt near as bad (although Moscoso was suppose to have a shot at a rotation spot… Read more »

OrangeRocks, I agree with your list. Anybody know what the issue was with the team and Roenicke not agreeing on a contract? How many dollars are we talking about?

And Esmil Rogers brought back two infielders in return. DOD has no idea how to get anything for his players. He has to go.

Maybe the guys on this site should start a O’Dowd must go site or a Facebook page.

Roenicke: should’ve kept him. Dumped him just because he wouldn’t sign a split contract. Total exposure to the Rockies if he pitched like crap early on and they wanted to send him down: about $250,000. Real money to me, chump change for a major league team. I’m not heartbroken about losing him, but as others have said the fact that he was claimed right away shows he has some value. I don’t think he’ll repeat 2012, but he was an… Read more »

I don’t know why the Rockies would require Roenicke to sign a split contract. He clearly had a major league season and deserved to make a major league minimum of about $400,000 per year.

Agbayani, I completely agree with your post.

It seems that one long-term problem has been the ability to develop pitchers. Hopefully the new pitching coaches will help with that.

Whether he signed it or not he would be gone. I’m clueless. They want Sullivan, a younger arm at 28 with shit for stats, to replace him? ok … who gets credit for this … Geivett?

The Rockies roster roulette this time of year with relief pitchers is pretty interesting, however I am going to remind everyone next year when the Rockies start complaining about not having any relief depth to back up their top four bullpen guys – Betancourt, Belisle, Bothers and Reynolds. The Rockies usually carry seven relief pitchers so it seems that we are short by three even before you consider any potential injuries – I just don’t get this at all? Plus… Read more »

The Rockies are a ship on the water just being blown wherever the wind and waves take them. No desire in pointing the bow in any direction. Raising the mast or even turning a rudder seems to be too much work….much less getting out the oars and paddling. It just seems the organization refuses to or is incapable of taking a proactive approach to ANYTHING they do whether its changing coaches and managers to hiring executives to bringing in free… Read more »
