Rox Draft Watch [Update]

The Rockies find themselves in the enviable position of holding a full house when it comes to the 2013 MLB draft. The Astros have the Royal Flush and the Cubs the Straight Flush, but the Rockies could have a winning hand if they play their cards right.

The projected player to go first is RHP Mark Appel from Stanford. Jonathan Gray, another RHP, is thought to go second. That would leave Kris Bryant, Clint Frazier and Austin Meadows as intriguing pickups for the Rockies.

So far those in RWO land feel that Bryant would make the best addition to the team. Sound off below with your thoughts.

I don’t know a ton about what it takes to move a position player, but could you move Bryant to 1st with Arenado already at 3rd? I would like one of the first 2 guys because we always need pitching, but I’d be happy with Bryant.

I think I would rather the Rox go with Bryant. Put him at 3rd to start and see where it goes the first 2 years. If Arenado extablishes himself as a legitimate big league 3B then consider moving Bryant to the OF or 1B. Not a hard transition considering Braun went from 3B to LF in 1 season. Much easier to play those positions than 3B or SS. I would love to see the Rox go get pitching, but I’m… Read more »

I’d remove Friedrich from the “failure” list – he really shows a lot of talent WHEN HEALTHY – that’s been his problem.

The DRAFT failure list – he may end up a washout due to injuries but not a wrong draft pick, IMO

Yep, Cameo, typically guys don’t have much trouble with moving to the easier end of the defensive spectrum. But if Bryant profiles as a pure first baseman (and not a corner outfielder) that lowers his value a lot. Assuming Gray’s PED thing really is nothing to worry about (not steroids/HGH), you gotta take him if he’s still on the board. Same with Appell.

Bryant profiles as very athletic and can play all four corners. playing third base most of time in college.

I just read a piece that says he wants to stay at third base. Does that carry much weight with teams, what the young fella wants?

Gammons is speculating that the Rox will surprise and pick a California high school first baseman named Dominic Smith. I won’t pretend to know anything more about him than what some draft watchers (the would be Mel Kipers of baseball) say: he’s a lefty who also pitches, he has a very impressive bat, and he’s probably athletic enough to play RF as well as 1B. He’s also tentatively committed to go to USC, so they better not draft him unless… Read more »

Another reason i don’t want pitcher with third choice, we pick #42 and looking at top 100 list in the 40s range there are plenty of pitchers. #41 Jason Hursh – TJ Surgery in August 2011, plus fastball, works quickly with lots of ground ball outs. One example but this one intrigues me.

Moving along, Rox pick #70 and #77. #70 prospect Carlos Salazar has graded out at 7 out of perfect 8 For fastballs and projected above average overall.

Lets hope Gray works out. If he’s a fly ball pitcher trade him for ground ball pitcher

Yay….a drug user. Just what I’d risk a #3 pick on.

Fantastic that Gray fell to us. When in doubt always take the guy who can throw 100 mph. Lots of folks thought Gray might go first instead of Appel, and nobody would’ve been shocked if that had happened. I’m just glad they didn’t over think things and go for a wild card or some kid they thought they could sign for under slot money. Now get a minor league pitching coach who can keep his concentration without resorting to Adderall… Read more »

Kevin Gausman was the 4th pick in the draft last year and is already in the majors. Let’s hope they sign Gray quickly, start him at Modesto. Next season he starts at Tulsa and is in Denver by mid-season 2014.

PLEASE, don’t let this don’t let this guy be another Greg Reynolds.

Anyone else having trouble with MLB.TV? It keeps timing out. Tried on computer and via the @bat app on ipad…..

Excited about the talent we just drafted, but was ecstatic(sp) about drafting Matzek too when that happened. Sorry, but with all the failures the Rox have had with pitching, I’m very pessimistic until he actually establishes himself as a major league pitcher. I think much less risky drafting a position player. Rox can’t miss here, just can’t miss with this pick. Rox really really really need him to pan out.

Imagine that! Getting out of that jam with Corpas. Nice to see Black burning his closer in the first game. Would love to see him go deep in the inning but I’d take the quick walkoff

Hopefully they can get Gray signed soon. At 6-4, 239, an easy throwing 94-97, sometimes 100, good slider and change, that’s a Coors Field pitcher. McMahon was a curious pick. A HS SS, even tho he’s projected at 3B but he was the 9th best at that position and from a great baseball school, Mater Dei in Santa Ana, Ca. Good pedigree. Balog was the 15th best right hander with a 96 fastball, doesn’t lose velocity late in the game,… Read more »

Sabrchip, thanks for the info on McMahon and Balog. And from what Schmidt said on the broadcast tonight: McMahon is a quarterback! (a high school quarterback, but still, we got that out of the way in the 2nd round this year)

Here’s the Draft Tracker from MLB.com for the Rox: http://colorado.rockies.mlb.com/mlb/events/draft/y2013/drafttracker.jsp#ft=team&fv=col #77 Sam Moll LHP Junior from Memphis 5’10” 185lbs DOB: 01/03/92 He may not be the biggest guy in the world, but the Memphis southpaw makes up for it with arm strength. Moll, Memphis’ Saturday starter, can touch the mid 90s at times with his fastball. His curve is a potential out pitch with a hard, sharp break to it and his changeup has the chance to be an average… Read more »
