The Rockies are sure glad to see the Mets leave town after getting swept in a three-game series, 5-1. David Hale had a bad start giving up five runs in the first three innings before retiring the final ten batters in a 6-inning outing. In the meantime, the hitters couldn’t solve Logan Verrett who was inserted as a spot starter out of the bullpen. It was supposed to be about a 50-pitch or five inning day at the office. Instead Colorado made this soft-tossing guy look like yet another Cy Young winner. Verrett went eight innings on 93 pitches with just one BB. CarGo provided the only run of the day with a straightaway shot into the rock garden.
Hale on the other hand, went six innings setting a club record with four wild pitches in the process. And he hit a batter for icing on the cake. But he did well to bounce back throwing perfect fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. New call ups, Simon Castro and Jairo Diaz tossed the last three innings on a combined two hits, no runs, and a walk.
Colorado continues to surge in the race for the first overall pick in 2016 draft with their loss today. They fly into Atlanta for a three=game set starting tomorrow evening at 5:10 MDT.
Hey yeah, in response to earlier post, a lot of us appreciate RWO and the staff writers and posters:) For a lot of reasons, pressure valve not the least. We Were Not Optimistic for 2015. These poor guys are damn near unwatchable (well, they are, but… ) What is BSCS or whatever the new acronym is? Tulo again. Sorry all – may I? I’ll concede to the Stats Guys now (AND the eyeball test/mystery/poetry part of the grand old game)… Read more »
Let’s give him a little slack as he’s having to deal with AL pitchers that he’s rarely seen and recently at least, not done very well against. And I’m sure he’s taut as a bow string every at bat and that can’t be helping. Maybe he helps them defensively during the final stretch and a playoff run, but I can’t see him loosening up and turning into an offensive force for the rest of this season. Maybe next year he’s… Read more »
GREAT TRADE.Reyes batting 70 pts.higher and matching Tulo in XB hits, plus we saved 50 million.Of course Reyes may have just talked himself out of Denver.Benched today because of comments in the Post?
No. Standard Rockies Sunday winning strategy.
Reyes spoke the truth. Good for him.
Blake Street Clown Show.
Yep. Intended to be specifically the Front Office.
It’s official now – THE WORST TEAM IN BASEBALL. Phils on a 3 game win streak. Rockies now have a .402 win percentage, Phils and Marlins .403. I’m betting on Walt to bring home that #1 draft pick!
You guys think you have it bad. The Rox are by far my favorite team, but I grew up a Phillies fan and didn’t make the switch until 1993. I’m rooting for teams 29 and 30 out of 30. Bring on the Broncos and Avalanche.
In the “it’s ridiculously early” department I posted a few weeks ago that it appears there will be 7 standout Prospects in next May’s draft. And…..as of now (this will change), there’s essentially no separation between the 7. 5 are pitchers. So, it’s not a Strasburgh/Harper type year where’s there’s a clear cut advantage to having the #1 pick. Basically, we’ll get the priviledge of paying more for a guy at #1 who’s the same as the Brewers get at… Read more »
That’s correct, but I still want #1 pick so we get the pitchers that is a fit with Coors Field before the others get their choices.
RMH – I agree (just getting in my snark quota above). Perhaps more importantly, it’s the 1st pick in the 2nd round, 3rd round, etc. It adds up.
2-7 on the homestand, with two exceptionally good games and seven really bad games. Forty games left. 18 at home 22 on the road. At the .402 winning percentage for the year, we might think 16 more wins, which would put them 65-97. I’m not seeing that happening. The home stand was .2222. The Nats-Mets trip was .2857. It’s easy to make a case for .250 as a best case win percentage over the last 40. That would put them… Read more »
The news from the minors:
Butler and Freeland stunk today in their starts today. Disappointing. But Matzek pitched a scoreless inning in relief, his fourth in a row. Maybe he’s starting to get his act together. And Sam Moll is really pitching well in a setup role for New Britain.
Today’s trivia. Which organization is this?
ML 62-61 (5 games out)
AAA 61-67
AA 64-59
High A 77-49
Low A 74-49
Short Season 36-27
It should also be noted that this Organization, in year 3 under a new GM and President, has made numerous trades and personnel decisions that seemed ” unconventional” to traditional media and experts.
Arizona – think LaRussa is in third year as President.
Correct. Most scoffed at the DBacks coming into this year.
One thing the DBacks have shrewdly done is invest in the foreign market. They signed Yasmany Tomas and the very promising looking Yoan Lopez……both from Cuba. LaRussa and his entourage are currently in Japan scouting. We are non-existent in both markets.
There are some good looking pitchers in their system at the moment.
The Jhoulys Chacin Reclamation Project begins shortly.
Mark Hulet does a Prospect “Stock Watch” for FanGrpahs on a regular basis. Here are two from today: “Ryan McMahon, 3B, Rockies: McMahon opened the year as one of my favorite “sleeper prospects” that not many people were talking about — but should have been. He’s still not getting the press he deserves but you can’t fault him; he’s produced his third straight season of .860 OPS or better. The 20-year-old third baseman hasn’t produced eye-popping power but you can… Read more »
