The Colorado Rockies will attempt to keep San Francisco starter Tim Hudson winless in his tenth start at Coors Field. For those glass is half empty fans, Ryan Vogelsong never pitched well at Coors until Friday night’s masterpiece. Better performance by the Rockies since ending the 11-game losing streak more or less coincided with the call ups for reinforcements. They split the 4-game series against the Dodgers and Phillies, both of whom were red hot coming into both series. The Giants were also red-hot when they came to town with a 8-game winning streak. If the Rockies pull out a victory today that will mark a third consecutive split against red-hot teams.
Dan Descalso now has as many HRs as Tulo. Ben Paulsen has been putting up better numbers so far than Justin Morneau did. David Hale and Christian Bergman showed the original rotation how to pitch for the Rockies: just throw first pitch strikes and fill up the zone, make the bad guys beat us and let’s not beat ourselves. Brandon Barnes already has more hits in less than a week than Drew Stubbs did over the entire season. More importantly he brought energy from Albuquerque and infused energy into the lifeless Rockies clubhouse. Everyone loved his hustle double on what should have been a routine single yesterday. A more subtle reason was the Rockies are striking out less often and putting more balls in play leading to an extra run or two.
The game is in a rain delay now. What? I live in Green Valley Ranch (about 15 miles from Coors) neighborhood and it has been bright and sunny since 11 am MDT.
