Rox Seek to Continue Improved Play

The Rockies have improved somewhat over the past three weeks.  They went 5-1 in the previous homestand after returning from a disastrous 1-9 road trip.  Then the men of Blake Street went 4-6 on the recent road trip of which two games in Philadelphia were in our bags when Betancourt blew two saves with an injured elbow before calling it quits.  Colorado just came off a 2-1 series win over Timmy’s Crybabies to complete a 7-2 season home series vs. the last place Giants.

With the off day yesterday, Walt Weiss (or was it his puppet masters?) wisely decided to start Jorge De La Rosa with his ailing thumb skipping organizational depth pitcher Jeff Manship against Reds’ Bronson Arroyo tonight at Coors Field.  The game starts at 6:40 p.m.  The sky over Green Valley Ranch neighborhood is mostly cloudy as of 4 pm MT with temps expected to be in the low 80s and humidity around 20 percent at game time.   The wind is forecasted to be less than 5 MPH. WEATHER UPDATE as of 4:30pm MT: strong winds swirling and scattered driving rain.

The lineup is without William, Money, and CarGo.  Beltin’ Helton is in the lineup tonight as he continues his push to reach the 2,500 hit milestone.  He needs two more hits to reach the milestone. The Rockies are 63-72 entering tonight’s game. Are they overrated or underrated? Believe it or not, they have the 8th best record in the NL out of 15 teams based on the winning percentage. One would hope they treat the weekend series vs. the Redlegs as if it’s late in the pennant race. Cincinnati is battling St. Louis and Pittsburgh for the NL Central title as well as playoff positioning.

The management has decided to shut down Jonathon Gray for the year after he pitched brilliantly since his shaky pro debut. Sunday the teams will be allowed to expand their rosters and we will probably see a 15-man pitching staff. Edgmer Escalona cleared the waivers and was assigned to Colorado Springs although their season is over. We will probably see Manual Corpas and Edge on the expanded roster. We can also reasonably expect Josh Rutledge to be here as well. CarGo has started taking swings in the batting cage and launched a couple of balls into the second deck. Tyler Chatwood had a good rehab start last Tuesday and is slated to come off the DL and start Sunday in the series finale.

It would have been cool for Helton to get his 3rd 3-run homer and his 2500th hit. And then immediately retire. I believe the Babe retired the day after he hit 3 homers

And Ted Williams hit a HR in his last pro at bat which would be cool for Todd.

Best case scenario (since I’ll be at tonight’s game):
Todd goes long tonight, opposite field, and I catch it. 🙂

I am hoping that Ryan Wheeler is called up. I liked him at 1st base and he has no future playing regularly at 3rd:-)

Would love your thoughts, please comment.x
