Rox Take on Friars in 3-game Set

Colorado opens a three-game set starting tonight against the Friars from San Diego.  It can arguably be a critical time in to see if the Rockies are for real or starting their annual slide in May to the basement of the NL West.  The Rockies offense have pretty much shut down since last Thursday except for Saturday’s game vs. Reds.  The shutdown is a result of a perfect storm that was brewing in the first week of May:  facing top tier pitchers or soft tossing lefties, our #4 and #5 pitchers lining up against opponents’ #1 and #2, striking out a lot (33 strikeouts over last 3 games), hitters regressing from over-performance to norms, starting to feel the impact of not having Cuddyer and Rosario in the lineup, and baseball gods not helping the Rockies.

Jorge De La Rosa takes the ball against another soft-tossing LHP Eric Stults tonight.  Jordan Lyle goes tomorrow night against LHP Robbie Erlin and once again our #5 pitcher Juan Nicasio goes against ace Andrew Cashner Sunday.  On a side note, the Rockies need to keep red-hot Seth Smith under wraps this weekend.

I’m an old guy so while I can “chat” its doesn’t come naturally to me so I’ll just use this format to comment a bit. JDLR came up like an ace tonight and the Rockies got just enough big hits and good defense to win. I’m still not sure what WW’s attraction to Boone Logan is. Maybe for one left-hand batter ok, but after that no-way. I usually don’t agree with Goodman and Huson and/or Frasier but they are right… Read more »

Bill, I think vacation might be the wrong word when it comes to the umps. It’s more a go home and see the family for three or four days, before heading out on the road for the next three weeks. They don’t have a six game home stand like the players. If bob Davidson is lucky enough to ump a Rox series, he’s only home for three days or so. And that is rare. As someone who travels for a… Read more »

Trip. I understand the traveling part. In the 1970’s and 1980’s when I was building my business I was on the road alot. I’d wake up in a motel and really couldn’t remember if the bathroom was to the left or to the right. If it’s for 3 or 4 days or so then I can understand it. But still when they bring in a kid to call balls and strikes last night who kept changing his strike zone there… Read more »

Bill, I was curious about umps, so went looking for more. Total of 68 MLB umps. So 60 regulars for the 15 games, and 8 floaters. Guessing they bring up a AAA ump on occasion. And the money is good for those good enough to make it.

Having read this I thought it was extremely informative. I appreciate you taking the time and
effort to put this content together. I once again find myself spending a significant amount of time both reading and leaving
comments. But so what, it was still worth it!
