It looks like the Rockies are signing John Garland after he opted out of his contract with the Mariners. He got a physical with the Rockies this morning and is expected to be a part of the starting rotation.
Garlands last game, ironically enough, was on June 1st, 2011 against…the Rockies. He was pitching for the Dodgers at the time and took the 3-0 loss with a line of five hits, three runs over six. He hasn’t pitched in a major league game since, battling with shoulder issues.
To make room on the 40 man, the Rockies have returned Rosenbaum to the Nationals. Rosenbaum was selected during the rule 5 draft. The Nationals have accepted Rosenbaum and he will join their team at camp.
[UPDATE] The team is sending Pomeranz to triple-A and Garland will join the starting rotation. Garland will wear #27. Garland signed a one-year contract which will pay him $500,000 with incentives.
i love the little stat about Garland last pitching against the Rockies before going on the DL in 2011…
And unlike other teams that are able to develop the Rockies scrap heap pitchers, the Rockies had picked a pitcher that never really seemed to be in the plans at all. Well maybe he was just lefty insurance against significant injury to Outman, Pomeranz or de la Rosa. Based on Rosenbaum’s minor league stats I thought he had a decent chance, but he never showed much and the Rockies really didn’t have much confidence in him either. Garland I like… Read more »
Sort of like this – especially since it cost nothing. I’m becoming more and more convinced we need a staff of saavy veterans that can absorb innings, keeping us in the game, and not get their egos bruised easily. Francis and Garland fit this description.
Bring back Josh Fogg! 🙂
Some of the best sideburns in MLB for a while 🙂
OrangeRocks, I wouldn’t be surprised if we traded for another starting pitcher. We have the pieces to trade to get one.
Are you freakin kidding me? I guess since it isn’t costing anything it is worth a roll of the dice … but seriously?
Maybe there is something to the jokes about the Rockies dream? A starting rotation of all “J’s”?!?!?
I believe I posted something to that effect last year when they had J. Guthrie, JDLR, JC and JN. Now they have removed one and added Francis and Garland. I call them the “J.Crew”.
the J crew … nice. I like that Bob.
classic about Garland: “Anything to keep a World Series champ from the 2005 Chicago White Sox in the league. If someone out there needs a third baseman, Joe Crede is available.
But the Rockies just want someone to give them dependable innings. And whose first name starts with the same letter as their other starters. Sorry, Drew Pomeranz.”
So who does Garland replace in the rotation? Nicasio or DrewPo?
I say Nicasio, due to his youth and the fact that he hasn’t spent enough time in the minors to develop his slider and change-up.With a second and third pitch he could be as dominant as Ubaldo once was.And if DrewPo needs time to perfect his mechanics,Volstad could start and has been an innings eater in the past.Of course we are all assuming that Garland is healthy and stretched out enough to start.I think Nicasio is the ace of the future… Read more »
Garland? Really? Ugh. This year’s Jamie Moyer. As for Rosenbaum: now, I’m not gonna get all bent out of shape about a Rule 5er being returned to his former club, but stick with me for a minute here, because this is telling: – Teams like the Rockies should take flyers on Rule 5ers simply because they will not be competing and literally have nothing to lose – O’Dowd seemed to get that. We had Rule 5ers back in the dark… Read more »
Great rant Ag,and spot on.I thought “Rosie” only had one really bad outing with several good ones also.
Would it have made more sense to cut someone else from the 40 man roster instead? Josh Sullivan, who is a few years older than Rosenbaum?
I don’t get why some of you are so negative on Jon Garland. You were all screaming to get a pitcher and we got a ground ball pitcher. He is not hurt any more. He had a great spring training without any set backs. As for Dan Rosenbaum we had no room for him on the 25 man active roster. Betancourt, Lopez, Brothers, Belisle, Escalona, Octavino, and Volstad make up our bullpen. Are you telling me that Rosenbaum is better… Read more »
RMH, I agree with your comment. I think that Garland is worth signing. I agree with your list of who is likely to comprise our bullpen and that Rosenbaum is not better than any of them, so we would have had no choice but to return him to Washington. After I wrote my previous comment it occured to me that it was incorrect in that it’s the 25 man roster that mattered regarding Rosenbaum, not the 40 man roster. I… Read more »
I just updated the article to include the fact that the team sent Pomeranz to Triple-A…
