Rox Visit Favorite Park

The Colorado Rockies visit Petco Park to take on the San Diego Padres tonight starting at 8:10 pm MT. This is the last multi-city road trip of the season, a ten-day, nine game journey through the NL West. They bring a 66-75 record into the game with Juan Nicasio opposing Burch Smith, who will make his fourth career start. The weather is not an issue in San Diego and it never has been an issue.

Nolan Arenado is being given a day off tonight to let his banged up thumb heal. What is it about the team’s widespread hand issues? Maybe they need to learn how to properly grip the bat and slow down their swings come spring 2014. CarGo as usual will watch the game from the bench until they need his Gold Glove in LF at the end of the game.

The Rockies have two objectives in the month of September. First, they need to play well to get the annual September collapse off their backs. Second they are auditioning the AAA players to see who can stick around should Todd Helton decide to hang up his spikes. Or use them as trade baits to get a right handed bat during the off season. Corey Dickerson, Charlie Blackmon, Josh Rutledge, and Charlie Culberson are the position players getting extensive playing time. Starters Chad Bettis, Drew Pomeranz(?), Jeff Manship, Roy Oswalt, and Juan Nicasio are getting a hard look. They are also giving Manuel Corpas, Jeff Francis, Rob Scahill, and Mitchell Boggs looks. Tyler Colvin has been removed from the 40-man roster.

Lead off double. A full-count walk. Two on base, nobody out. Then, a dumb-ass overswing on THE FIRST pitch, and a three-pitch strike-out by an over-amped hothead, then a weak ground-out to second. Jeez, can’t anybody here play this game?

By the lineup, your account has Cuddyer as the over-amped hothead…?!? Excuse me if I didn’t read/follow correctly but that’s hardly how I would describe Michael – ever.

and Brothers is showing over work and law of averages catching up to him.I’m not sure Todd will retire-and not sure I think he should.I do doubt he would continue with any team other than the Rockies, especially with his family obligations.

He’s got to retire. He’s on a nice little roll here late in the game, and it would be best to finish somewhat strong rather than put in a weak season and leave everybody cringing. Or get hurt and have that be the sad end.

It’s a tough loss but the good outing by Nicasio shouldn’t be overlooked. At this point it appears that he can be penciled into the starting lineup next year along with DLR, Chacin, and Chatwood. It’s anybody’s guess who next year’s fifth starter will be at the start of the year, although by the end of the year we could see Butler and/or Gray in the starting rotation. And then there’s Oswalt, Bettis, Pomeranz, Friedrich, Bergmann, Anderson, and Winkler. Is… Read more »
