The Rox take on the Padres tonight in San Diego. Typically a visit to PetCo where the Rockies have had some success in the past, especially after sweeping the Padres less than a week earlier, would be cause for optimism. But after the baseball world focused their collective consciousness on the southern coast last night, it will be more than a typical game, to be sure.
The Padres showed some fire in the form of an all out brawl after Zack Greinke beaned Carlos Quentin on a 3-2 pitch with the Dodgers leading 2-1. After both benches, bullpen and buses unloaded, the dust settled and Greinke left the game with a broken collarbone and some ‘spalin to do. Quentin is in the lineup for the Padres tonight, so expect the banter each time he comes to the plate to be turned up to 11.
This series marks the second time the Padres and Rockies have played each other already this season. Colorado enters today’s game on a 3-game losing streak after being swept by San Francisco Monday-Wednesday. The Rockies are now 2-4 on the road this season. Colorado won their first road series of the season 2-games-to-1 over the Milwaukee Brewers.
• RHP Jon Garland will be making his ninth career start against the Padres as he’s 3-4 with a 3.60 ERA (50.0 ip, 20 er) against the Friars. This will mark his 23rd career start at PETCO having spent the 2010 season with San Diego. He owns a 9-7 record with a 3.20 ERA (132.0 ip, 47 er) in the venue.
• RHP Tyson Ross will make his 2nd career start against the Rockies today having made the start on 4/6 at Coors Field (L, 4.0 ip, 3 r). This will also mark his Padres home debut.

That brawl was so dumb on so many levels. Charge the mound after being hit on a 3-2 pitch in a 2-1 game! Dumb. Greinke lowering his shoulder and acting like a football player! Dumb. Catcher not tackling Quinten – dumb. Adrian Gonzalez coming over to help at a snails pace – dumb.
Amen
Sorry there Jenny Cavnar … 6 weeks? Try doubling that. Even the 8 weeks that MLBtv is reporting Greinke will be out has to be a best case scenario.
Quentin has been suspended for 8 games. Wonder if he plays tonight or drags out an appeal?
8 game suspension seems completely disproportionate to the crime — a pitcher may have his season ended (and really, that’s very possible) and you get 1/20 of a season as a suspension? More mound charging! Let’s have a designated charger. I nominate Reid Brignac.
Good riddance! (Brignac)
