Rox vs. Padres (3/10)

lineup 10Mar2014

The subtitle catch you off-guard?  For those who doesn’t know, JD’s wife is a SD fan.  My guess is that they won’t be talking at the dinner table tonight unless the game ends in a tie.

The game begins at 1:10 pm MST (Arizona)/2:10 pm MDT.  Venue is SRF@TS.  No TV today.

As Agbayani noted, the news media columnists are catching the advanced metrics craze.  Troy Renck had an excellent article in today’s Denver Post about the Rockies bullpen.  They had a real bad 8th inning ERA (4.78 above MLB’s average of 3.51) thanks mostly to Matt Belisle and Wilton Lopez.  But Brothers had a 0.40 ERA in 25 8th inning appearances.  This explains the Rockies’ shuffling of the chairs in the bullpen thereby unofficially officially naming LaTroy Hawkins as the closer.  If Renck is as reliable as the Rockies’ thinking, he thinks that Hawkins, Boone Logan, and Brothers will be at the back end allowing Belisle and Lopez to pitch earlier in games.  He also thinks “Zero” is in as a long reliever.  Now here’s the problem I have with his assessment; he says a final spot will go to the winner among Bettis, Chris Martin, Matzek, Scahill, and Massett.  No mention of Thomas Kahnle or Franklin Morales?  My guess is that Morales is a strong candidate as a starter (he starts today) and he totally forgot about Kahnle unless I missed the Kahnle returned to the Yankees transaction if that happened.  Renck also did not consider the possibility of going with an eight-man bullpen (10 games-day off-13 games to start season).  FWIW, Fangraphs ranks the Rockies’ relievers fourth overall in baseball, projecting a WAR of 3.9.

Today is my first live game of spring training.  If anybody happens to be in the area robba, TJinPhoenix, EdtheUmp, and myself are meeting at the Tavern Grille in Scottsdale today 11:30 am local time. (http://taverngrillescottsdale.com/index.html).

Ha! Yeah, i am lucky enough to be married to someone that LOVES baseball…sadly, she loves the wrong team!!! Padres win, we get steak…Rockies win, it is all beets and asparagus…

The Tigers have lost Andy Dirks to injury……so they’re in need of a LFer. We’ve got those! But…..after Ian Kinsler, their 2nd base situation is bleak, so no match there. I’ve watched Kris Medlen walking off the mound after his injury and no way that’s a good situation, regardless of what the Braves said immediately after the game. They already have Brandon Beachy down, and Mike Minor has had some shoulder discomfort. I’m going all “in” with the Nats in… Read more »

Yep, the stars are aligning for the Nationals this year. But didn’t I hear “Doug Fister, elbow tightness?”

Your description of Kahlne physically matches mine. He visually (size, height, build) looks like Brothers, but he throws right handed. I’m going 60-40 he makes the team.

Here’s a wild scenario for you guys – what if the Braves called and said we need Frankie Morales. We’ll give you Dan Uggla and pick up 2/3 of his salary. Would you do it?

Hell yes. Uggla is due for a bounceback year. Put him in Coors and it will happen. He can play the first 6 innings and then bring in DJ for defensive purposes. I would think he could also play 1st base if needed.

I remember talk of Uggla coming up in trades a few years back and i’ll reiterate what i said then – i would never want the guy on my team because we don’t need hitting as much as pitching and when you have someone as horrible with a glove as he is then your pitchers aren’t as successful as they should be. He is a detriment to any pitching staff with how poorly he plays his position. That is my… Read more »

HA! Thanks RMH! It was great to meet you and your wife! Ed, of course, came through with terrible seats…i mean…my view was obstructed by the coaches sitting RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME! 🙂 It’s great to put names with faces (RMH, ROBBA)….had a blast…am back in the office today, have fun all! The best (worst?) part of the day was the look on RMH/Ed’s faces when “Kerosene” started off strong only to see it fade quickly. It was like… Read more »

I don’t believe Ottavino is a lock to make this team out of ST. So far he’s been so-so and he still has options left which means he can be sent down to CS without having to clear waivers. So, if it came down to keeping “O” and sending Kahnle back to Yanks, I’d say keep Kanhle and send “O” down to CS for added depth.

Ed’s seats are ridiculous……..that’s for sure.

I think Ed can call balls and strikes from those seats. Probably make calls at first too. I’m still trying to get down there weekend after next. Seats are tough to come by! I may go check out the Rockies at the White Sox park since I can still find Ed-type seats there with no problem. Our fans have got to have the highest interest level in the whole Cactus League. Thanks for the reports on my man Kahnle. Not… Read more »
