Rubber Game vs. Dodgers 4/24/2016

Walt Weiss continues searching for a lead-off hitter to replace @Chuck_Nazty.  Today it is @TheBarnyard15 ‘s turn to give it a try.  I think I heard that Colorado is dead last in the majors for batting average and/or OBP out of the lead off hitter.  Doug Garneau gets the start behind the dish today to counter a left handed starter (Travis Wood).

There was nothing significant to write about last night’s game.  Offense did nothing mostly cuz of the performance by Maeda while Bettis did ok except for getting into countless deep counts.  The bullpen did well pitching multiple innings to keep them intact.

Game at 2:10 MDT on ROOT RM tv and 850AM radio.

I like Chris Rusin so much more than JDLR or Lyles.

That was a great AB by Story. Didn’t work out, but he’s seeing more pitches.

This team wants to win. They just need average SP.

Story had a similar AB last night against Maeda too. Came back from down 0-2 if I remember correctly, then fought off a bunch until he was able to single to the opposite field. Very encouraging to see him adapt; can’t swing for the fences in every situation.

Hoffman got the W today for the ‘topes. 6 solid innings.

And on the other hand … Jesus Tinoco – 2 IP, 9 H, 7 ER. 14.85 ERA now in Modesto. As one of the purplerow commenters said, he’s pitching like he was the third pitcher acquired in the Tulo trade … meanwhile, in Hartford, Matt Carasiti is starting to put up some really nice peripherals as their closer. I’m guessing he moves up very fast now since we do run through pitchers pretty fast at Coors.

I read somewhere that his velocity is off (like high 80’s instead of mid-90’s). Typically one of two things, injury or mechanics. Let’s hope it’s the latter.

Ouch. If they were contenders, this one could really sting if things were close late in the season. As it is, it only stings once – now. (Is this my convoluted version of looking on the bright side?). Crazy game and putrid top of the 9th. I actually bailed when it got to be 7-1, watched a movie, and came back to find it 7-5 and watched it unfold from there. Ag, you were saying maybe Story is a little… Read more »

Yeah, roxnsox, that was not a good series of events that started with Cargo crashing into the poor kid. Story – I think he was considered a pretty solid fielder in the minors. Not spectacular or acrobatic or anything, but a “makes all the plays you expect a SS to make” guy. Today was definitely nerves in my opinion, failing to get the ball out of the glove in time for DJ to turn two. More troubling is the apparent… Read more »

I love when I flip on a game just as it’s starting to get good. I did that today in the 6th inning. Rox leave the bases loaded! But wait … there’s a big comeback in them after all! And all Jake McGee has to do is hold down a 3 run lead in the 9th. Oops. As others have said, McGee has looked very hittable so far but he’s been skating by. Not today. He got killed. Of course,… Read more »

From what I have seen there have been at least a half dozen possible DPs that Story has blown so far. Because a DP cannot be anticipated he does not get an error for those except in the cases where he blows the whole play and they don’t even get an out.

He throws high or wide to first too often, also.

That game was crazy for both teams. Plenty of blame to go around. My first thought is “a team doesn’t deserve to win a game when they walk 10 batters.” But the Dodgers walked 9. Ag – you’re correct regarding Story. He’s playing “tight” defensively.

Trying to find some bright spots – Chris Rusin, Justin Miller, and Mark Reynolds defensively.

Maybe a silver lining?

The Pirates used 7 pitchers in 13 innings today in Phoenix. So it’s not like they’re any better off than we are heading into this series.

McGee looks like a chubby version of LaTroy Hawkins. 94mph crushable fastball without any other pitches to offer. I hope he gets back to being the electric pitcher he was in the highlights I watched when he was acquired. This game may have been the motivation I need to cancel my monthly purchase of MLB TV. It was a beautiful day out on Sunday and I wasted it watching and listening to this team walk people. Rusin needs to be… Read more »

I’m a Rusin fan. He’s a good athlete. Generally has good command. Simple mechanics. Should be durable. Is actually useful as a hitter, and even could be used as a pinch runner on days when he’s not pitching (not that Walt thinks out-of-the-box like that). He’s really a perfect #5 for the Rockies.

Don’t forget he had elbow surgery and then 39 appearances last season. I think he went 1-2 with about a 2.40 era. Regardless of the media speak the Rays put out they were willing to let him go. He had just agreed to a new 1 yr. deal.
The highlights you speak of were probably from pre-surgery 2 seasons ago.

Those who’ve seen enough of Lyles: I checked, and he does have one option left. And right now I agree–he needs to straighten himself out in AAA or even AA. Rusin is perfectly capable as a 5th starter, and there’s plenty of other arms to go to for the pen. The bold move would be to go straight to Freeland to either start or relieve ….

Good catch on the remaining option associated with Lyles. He needs to rent an apartment in ABQ for a couple on months.

They changed Lyles mechanics because of his foot injuries. He had a bad spring training and was not and is not ready to pitch at the major league level with his new mechanics. Rusin’s early injury in spring training kept him from being ready to join the rotation at the start of the year. Remember this is the pitcher that had 2 CG wins at Coor’s Field last year. Right now and last year he was and is a much… Read more »

McGee (aka Chubby LaTroy) — some of us question why the Rockies seem to be behind the curve in analytics. I have to think that last year the analytics guys did a report that states what was already well known: breaking balls aren’t as effective at elevation, but fastballs actually “gain” 1 or 2 mph. Bridich then got a little carried away: “hey, let’s find guys who have (in the past!) managed to succeed by above-average fastball alone!” Hence, Motte… Read more »

Too soon to judge the Rays/Rockies trade (and I’m not suggesting that you’re attempting to do that anyway). To me……a big part of that trade is (potentially) dealing McGee near the deadline. Of course that is making two rash assumptions:
1. McGee is desirable.
2. The Rox are thinking two moves ahead – not their typical MO.

FWIW – the Orioles just claimed David Hale.

Even if they had a time machine, do you think the Rockies would bid on Kenta Maeda? I bet they would pass, ha ha! You made a good reference to pitching with guts which definitely is a comparison LaTroy and McGee share. Most times they can get through an inning with mostly miss hits and survive, however, they both have those innings like last night. Never the dominant inning that you see from typical closers.

Ag gets the Psychic/Detective of the Day award as Lyles wins an all-expense paid vacation to ABQ. This is a good (I never take it for granted that the Rox will make the right move). Hundley activated. Oberg brought up for a few days, but it appears Rusin will pitch Friday (also the correct move). The Rox have avoided lads year’s atrocious weather so far…..but this Pirates series will try the perfect weather record. The Pirates are an exceptional team,… Read more »
