Colorado repeated a 5-3 lead going into the 9th yesterday similar to Friday night’s game. The result was different as the Rockies held on to win 5-3 instead of losing 7-5 as they did Friday night. The difference was Carlos Estevez. Jason Motte started the ninth and put two on with no outs. WW summoned Estevez and he got three outs with the help of Dustin Garneau nabbing the base thief to end the game.
WW now says Estevez will be the closer if available. Motte will do share of closing when Estevez is unavailable. There’s been other changes as well in the pitching staff. Jake McGee was put on the DL and surprisingly Tyler Anderson was called up instead of a relief pitcher. Not only that, Anderson is starting today’s game instead of Eddie Butler. Also after Thursday’s stellar performance by JDLR, he was moved back into the rotation and will start Tuesday against the Yankees. Yet to be answered is who has been removed from the rotation for JDLR and Anderson? Is it Butler, Chris Rusin, or Chettis? Is it possible that Anderson is being called up for just one start to give Chettis extra time? The good news is that the Rockies have Monday and Thursday off this week.
Game starts at 2:10 MDT and televised on ROOT-RM and aired on 850AM radio. The challenge for Anderson today is to avoid throwing first-pitch FBs at the aggressive Padres hitters. On the other side, can the offense show why Christian Friedrich was released by pounding him today?
