Today’s Roster Decisions

The Rockies haven’t announced the 25 man roster yet, but they are making the math a little easier to guess at. Today the team sent Josh Rutledge, Michael McKenry, Jason Pridie and both Wheelers (Tim and Ryan) down to the minors. The move will solidify Pacheco as backup dishmaster. There is also talk of Janish being on the short list of cuts, giving Culberson a long look at a utility infield spot. Lyles as SP (and indirectly Kahnle) and winner of Blackmon/Dickerson yet to be determined.

Renck: “I was just told that Janish was sent down by Rockies source.   So Culberson is the UTL guy by this math.”  It means either both Blackmon and Dickerson make the team or they changed their minds and go with 8-man bullpen.  Chance increasing for Kahnle to make club.

Bummer about RutRut…I was hopeful he would break out, but he did start spring off on the wrong foot (ankle), didn’t he…he’ll be back, i predict… Also a little worried that McKenry was send down after calling such a great game with the DeaLeR yesterday…some reports would suggest that De La Rosa wasn’t comfortable with Baby Bull’s game calling his previous outing and McKenry and he worked well together. Still not sure Pacheco is much better behind the plate, but… Read more »

You must be breathing easier that Paul Janish has apparently been dismissed 😉

I agree that at Rutledge’s stage of development – he needs to play virtually everyday. If that means CS – so be it.

No real surprises to me based on how ST evolved, although before ST I predicted Ryan Wheeler would make the club. So I’ll own that one.

I like this bench a whole lot better than what we broke spring training with last year. Remember, we had Herrera, Pacheco, EY Jr., and Brignac as subs — even though EY played outfield, it felt like 3 utility guys + Pacheco + Colvin off the bench. Assuming Culberson is the only backup infielder we’re stretched a bit thin on the infield, but I’m o.k. with that since it will make it hard for Weiss to give the starters extra… Read more »

Hi guys-question:is the Mar 31 season opener on ESPN? And if so,is there any reason why it would be blacked out here in Colorado?

It’s scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on ESPN 2. Have no idea about blackouts, Gary.

It will be blacked out on ESPN because Root has it locally

I like the new roster. But only if we play a strict platoon. Morneau starts against righties and Cuddyer (and occasionally Rosario or Pacheco when Cuddyer needs a day off) starts at first base against lefties. Stubbs and Barnes start against lefties, and Blackman or Dickerson start in center when there’s a righty on the mound, with Cuddyer starting in right except when he needs a day off, and then the other one starts. CarGo would get the occasional day… Read more »

100% agree, Julian. This CF-RF-1B rotation only works — and even then, doesn’t really work well, only acceptably — if Weiss has the discipline to stick to a strict platoon as you’ve described. We’ve got a lot of half-decent, 2.5 skill players at those positions. It’ll be difficult to manage given player egos and our inability to react perfectly to pitching changes — Weiss will use up his bench quickly when the opposition brings in a righthanded reliever for a… Read more »

Dbacks setup man David Hernandez needs TJ surgery too. He follows their best starter, Patrick Corbin, down that route. They’re dropping like flies this spring …

Yep…..saw this. Generally solid setup man (not so solid last year though). In theory, they had bought some pen depth with Addison Reed (while keeping Putz, Ziegler, and Hernandez). Well……….that just got shot down.

Braves, Reds, and DBacks really slammed by injuries……and the Rangers in the AL.

Trade Wilton Lopez!! Throws 92 mph, but throws right in the hitters’ swing paths.

Keep Kahnle.

Yep, I only caught a couple games, and I only saw Lopez in the weekend game where I had seats that weren’t good enough to comment on things like how much sink his sinker had, but he was effective this spring and I have considered him a good bounceback candidate all winter long and I saw nothing to change that assessment. This regression to the mean thing works both ways — for Lopez, his mean is considerably better than what… Read more »

There’s gotta be another move coming. They can’t open the season with 6 outfielders and one back-up infielder. The one time I saw Culberson playing somewhere other than 2nd (or LF) his arm was very unimpressive. I don’t think he’s much more than a back-up 2B. I would hope that they send Lyles down, give Morales the 5th starter and keep the guy from the Yankess. (I keep forgetting his name.) I’m still not sold on either Morales or Nicasio… Read more »

Looks like the final pieces are dropping into place just now…Rockies PR just tweeted:

#Rockies option Jordan Lyles to AAA, place Jhoulys Chacin (R shoulder strain) & Boone Logan (L elbow inflam.) on 15-day DL.

This means Morales 5th starter and Kahnle (yay!) in the pen!

And going one step further – when Boone Logan is activated (could be as soon as next weekend) one of the OFer’s will be sent down/traded.

Kahlne has a month to prove himself. Chacin due back early May.

I suspect Logan will come off the DL and go right to a rehab assignment. He hasn’t had enough work to pitch in games yet, and that would buy the Rockies a couple more weeks to figure out what to do with the pen. I’m not concerned about Culberson as the utility man since LeMahieu can move to SS or 3B and handle both perfectly well for the short term, although I do think they’ll try to balance the roster… Read more »

Although I would still like to see another back up middle infielder I think they are protected enough at the corners to get by if they have no major injuries. Pacheco and Cuddyer can play 3rd and Cuddyer, Rosario, Pacheco and (I think) Dickerson can play 1st. I’m guessing that Kyle Parker could be called up sometime to be the 1B of the future. I’m not sure which Wheeler is which and who plays where. One of my big concerns… Read more »

I agree. You can’t overstate what Helton and the Cat brought to the infield defensively. It will be tough for anyone to match up with the consistency shown in the past that gave the infielders the confidence to go ahead and throw just about anything towards first. You may recall how quickly NoDo praised Todd after winning the Gold Glove. He certainly knew that many of those ridiculous outs may have been infield hits if not scooped cleanly. Remember, Todd… Read more »

Who would have thought?

Ian Stewart makes Angels 25 man roster!!

Culberson: 2 errors yesterday, I think both as a SS. Rutledge is probably having trouble hiding a smile – he’ll be back soon. Ian Stewart back in the bigs? Never thought it would happen. We need to get a pool going on how long till he hits the DL. And RMH, they do keep confirming that Logan is due back Saturday, but I’m thinking they’ll want to hold off on a corresponding roster move for a bit and a rehab… Read more »
