The Colorado Rockies will be looking to avoid a weekend sweep at the hands of the San Diego Padres this afternoon when the two teams meet for a third game at 2:10 pm MDT Petco Park in San Diego. No. 5 starters have been “problemmatic” for the Rockies this season, so with a novel twist of tricky tactics they’ll double-up and try two this time. Colorado will start right-hander Chad Bettis (0-3, 5.45), then veteran Roy Ozwalt will return from his torn hammy to back-up the rookie. They’ll contend with the Padres’ Ian Kennedy (6-9, 4.96; 3-4, 4.04 with SD).
Bettis was battered for 5 runs on 8 hits by the Dodgers on Monday while Ozwalt was rehabbing over on the Western Slope. Kennedy, obtained from Division rival Arizona in late July, beat the Giants on Monday, allowing a run on 5 hits in 6 innings. He struck-out 7.
William Dexter Fowler continues to sit for Colorado manager Walt Weiss. Josh Rutledge gets a start at 2nd-base, resting DJ LeMahieu a spell. Jordan Pacheco will catch Bettis. The enormous Kyle Blanks is back at 1st-base for the Padres, hitting 5th. Reymond Fuentes will handle center-field and Rene Rivera catches Kennedy.
The San Diego Chamber of Commerce is running-out the 78° and sunny program this afternoon. It’ll be windy, 11 MPH blowing across from left to right, with 68% relative humidity. No surprises on the broadcast front: TV’s on ROoT, radio KOA 850 am.
